I borrowed the book from the library and I enjoyed reading it. By then I already knew about shares and how to minimise risk when choosing stocks (I am a conservative investor) but I was not fully successful until I read Tracey Edwards´ book.
These days I am a follower of her youtube videos.

I have been wanting to invest for a while now, and had been trying to research how on earth I would go about such a thing, but was constantly overwhelmed and confused with information. Most of this information was written primarily written by men in technical jargon, which there is nothing wrong with, but I find it hard to follow. Edwards noticed this too, and so Shopping For Shares is written with the emotional journey of investing in mind, and framing it this way made investing seem so much more accessible and possible for me.

The basics of investing and how I would go about doing it are now crystal clear to me. Tracey Edwards covers short and long term investing, addresses the fears that most people have about investing, instructs sensible ways to analyse and choose which stocks to invest in, and provides her method/rules of investing that stops you from losing all your money. She even provides a chapter on budgeting to save up for your first foray into investing, and you need way less than you might think to begin. Edwards herself began with $1000!

This is the 2006 edition (the only one the library had), which may be a bit out of date by now & I notice there's a 2011 edition so I'll have to hunt that down to see what's changed. I was, of course, rolling my eyes a little at shopping and marriage analogies, but they did help me understand the concepts better, so maybe they weren't quite so bad. I also would have liked some kind of concise summary of her "rules" at the end, as they are spread all throughout the book, making it a tad annoying. However, at the end of the day, Tracey's goal is to help all women invest confidently and I believe she has achieved that in Shopping For Shares.

I have been borrowing a few books from the library on wealth building, and I have enjoyed this one the most.

Edwards explains a lot of the financial terms in plain English and gives good examples so you can see strategies at work. Now, I can look at charts and understand what most of it means. I plan on doing some research and dipping my toes into the share market.

While it is pointedly directed at women, this book would also benefit male readers.

The good: great explanations and suggested strategies in plain English
The bad: I wanted to know more about investing in Managed Funds and ETFs
The ugly: it has a few too many references for my liking to shoes. Yeah, I get it - stereotype - but it can get a bit annoying.

Learned a lot and enjoyed the easy to understand and conversational tone. It is funny though, at one point I was thinking it needed a serious chapter about the importance of women getting their finances together. Talking about the wage gap, the retirement money gap or the effect of divorce. I even thought her saying she'd use her dividends on "shopping" a bit sexist.... but then hey, I like the book cos it wasn't so serious! I read it all because of that.. so all good I guess. Can't wait to start investing.

Tracey wrote a very easy to read with a conversation-like narrative. It didn't go into the nitty gritty details but went straight to the point of how Tracey looks for her shares.

For me I found the book grounding in a sense - it doesn't hype up the possibly profits you could gain and gave realistic numbers that you would expect from shares.

I would recommend 'Shopping for Shares' to any one who hasn't had a good look at shares yet and wants to know the basics eg. looking for a broker etc...

This is a really great book. As the author says, it's not only for women, but will appeal to anyone who dislikes overly technical explanations. As well as teaching you the basics, the book outlines some of the successful (and simple!) techniques the author uses. A must-read for anyone wanting to learn (or re-learn) the fundamentals of investing.

Some particularly useful sections and insights, though I wouldn't use the book as a one-stop-shop. This topic inevitably needs a wide base of understanding and this was useful to help me to understand how to buy and sell shares effectively.

Loved this book, easy to read and engaging. I borrowed it from the library but have now bought a copy for myself so I can refer back to it.
