On the Cave You Live In

Rate this book
Poetry. ON THE CAVE YOU LIVE IN is Philip Jenks' first full-length collection. His poems are both intimate and strange, encompassing personal history and the politics of Appalachia, epileptic seizures and Baptist glossolalia, memory cells and Kentucky coal mines. His cave describes the limits of what's known, and his poems explore the "spaces between the aura and the jolt." "At various turns hieratic and profane, their blur the blur--in equal parts--of the confessed and the prophetic, these poems direct us to the language that starts just past 'that point/ where nothing is not.' Cassandra lives there; and Stein--and so does Philip Jenks"--Carl Phillips.

radical, these are simply not the sorts of books I would write about capitalism. Good ol' goodreads has yet to change this and has combined us. So, I contain multitudes. I didn't write those books.

I almost never, ever, say that I dislike poetry. I despised this book.

Heard Jenks read at Myopic Bookstore last weekend. Lovely and entertaining. The darkness of the text contrasted with his delightfully amusing personality, plus the mark (? a love bite perhaps?) on his neck.

I'm not sure. Sometimes the lines weren't pieced together enough as a whole for me to really get something from the poem. Maybe this is a case of it being more powerful heard than read.
