„La Lilieci“ este, de fapt, numele cimitirului satesc al Bulzestilor: o lume, asadar, inmormantata, dar cu care inca se mai comunica, evocata prin ritualuri de pomenire ce se desfasoara in chiar acest spatiu si mai ales reinviata in cuvant din memoria localnicilor, din traditiile si din folclorul lor.

Fata de poezia scrisa pana atunci de Marin Sorescu, La Lilieci se deosebeste intr-o foarte mare masura. Acel joc, manierist ca tipologie, al ideilor cu fantezia a disparut, dezvoltarile „baroce“ ale imaginilor ingenioase nu se mai regasesc aici, iar confesiunea directa e, de asemenea, ca si absenta si nu e asumata „liric“... Alte „medieri“ si-au facut, in schimb, aparitia si au o functie determinanta: naratiunea, dialogul, descrierea „realista“ de decoruri naturale si gospodaresti, de secvente de viata „normala“, cu elemente cand mai banale, cand mai insolite, conducand spre o viziune dramatica, teatrala a lumii

In 1964 the Romanian Communist government relaxed its censorship policies, signaling a new openness to free expression. The nation's poets heeded that signal, and Romanian poetry experienced a striking revival. Poet and playwright Marin Sorescu is perhaps one of the most popular figures to emerge from Romanian literary culture in the years since.

Sorescu writes in a plainspoken, down-to-earth style spiced with sly humor. He responds to the hardships of Romanian life not with grand rhetoric or fire-and-brimstone sermons, but with what translator Michael Hamburger describes as "ironic verse fables," as quoted by Dennis Deletant in the Times Literary Supplement. Virgil Nemoianu, also writing in the Times Literary Supplement, comments that "[Sorescu's] reactions to an increasingly absurd political regime were always cleverly balanced: he never engaged in the servile praise of leader and party usually required of Romanian poets, but nor did he venture into dissidence. He was content to let irony do its job."

His choice of irony over confrontation has made it possible for Sorescu to publish freely and frequently. The journal he edited for years, Revista Ramuri, managed like his poetry to stay within the bounds expected by the Romanian regime. Sorescu's plays, however, have not always fared as well. Both Iona and Exista nervi played to packed houses in Bucharest, the former in 1969 and the latter in 1982. But both plays were quickly withdrawn, their content deemed too controversial. Nonetheless, notes Deletant, the success of these pieces during their brief runs solidified "Sorescu's status as one of the leading writers of his generation."

Sorescu's plays and poetry have earned him, Deletant further states, "an unequaled audience" at home in Romania. And translations of his work into English have helped him build a secure international reputation. The qualities that have allowed his writings to flourish on Romania's state-controlled literary scene may contribute to his popularity abroad as well. There is a universality to Sorescu's conversational tone and ironic perspective, what Nemoianu calls "his rueful jocularity and the good-natured cynicism." George Szirtes, writing in Times Literary Supplement, finds in Sorescu's voice "the wry wisdom that sees through everything and yet continues to hope and despair."

Când auzea maica de vreo fată care se mărită
Și nu vrea să se ducă la bărbat, zicea:
„Fată, dacă bărbatul te duce
Lângă un gard, mături bine, migălești, strângi
Și tu acolo, mături, împodobești cu sălcii, cu boji
Și stai acolo. De dragul lui.
Aia e casa ta, ce vrei?
Să nu te măriți, dacă nu ești în stare să-ți placă tot.

O fomee trăia rău cu bărbatul
Rău, rău
Și odată prin pădure a văzut un urs și s-a luat după el
Și s-a dus în vizuina lui
Și-a stat acolo
Și la urmă a întâlnit un om și-a zis ăla:
Cum ai venit tu după urs, năroado?
Și ea: << Mi-e mai bine cu ursul decât
Cu bărbatul meu >>.
Vezi, ursul îi aducea miere.

Și ce spuneam mai înainte:
Să te ducă bărbatul lângă un par
Să zică: << Asta e casa noastră >>.
Și tu să stai acolo de drag.”

Before reading this book,I said to myself that I won't drop any book.I've tried,I really did try and finish this book.But instead,I ended up avoiding reading in general and wanted so bad to try and read something else and now I will explain why.

I have read 172 pages.The first"La Lilieci"book and the beginning of the second.That's about 35%.I should mention that this book features poetry,as it tells the stories of one little Romanian village named Bulzeşti,near Craiova.And of all the 57 poems I've read,I've liked,only liked,one of them,"Ciudin".So,there's no guarantee I would like any of them if I continue reading.And I think it's not worth it to carry on reading.

I don't like books that tell the story of Romanian peasants.I don't like the way they talk and I don't like the characters or their actions for that matter. Romanian villages or peasants never had that something that would keep me interested or something that would make me want to find more about the characters or the story.And nor does this book.

Final Rating:1/5.I did not like it.

(I will probably give it another chance at some later point in my life.)

"Copiii se joaca de-a ascunzisul printre morminte,
Voi ai cui sunteti, impielitatilor?
Nu calcati pe busuioc si nu ciopliti crucile cu custura,
Ca va taie popa limba."

Într-un univers literar în care marea masă a poeților se ia într-atât de în serios încât ajunge să chinuie atât cititorul obișnuit cât, mai ales, tineretul obligat să treacă cu bacul peste limba română, Marin Sorescu a făcut o figură aproape unică.
Subiectele abordate sunt departe de a fi sofisticate, modul de tratare este mai degrabă lejer, Sorescu poate fi confundat lejer cu țăranul român hâtru, optimist și pus pe șotii chiar și atunci când nu pare a fi cazul. De exemplu, în cimitir, referindu-se la femeile îndoliate:

"Cele care au morti mai noi, au mai tras un ropot de plans,
De cum au intrat pe poarta, si-au pus banitele jos din cap,
Celelalte au fost numai triste si cazute pe ganduri."

M-a traumatizat. Am zis să-i dau 2 stele că e Sorescu nu de alta

This is a totally different type of poetry than most of what I read before. I know that what I think the poetry is has totally changed during 20th century. But I never imagined the change would be so dramatic. In the end, I kind of like these new poetry, although I did not expected it.
