Faerie Believers #1

The Emerald Fae

Rate this book
Faeries, Humans, Hunters, Believers, and those in between.

Seventeen year old Kathleen discovers a world within Ireland full of mischief, danger, darkness, hate, and love. She is only human, so why is she so important to the faeries of Éire? Is she the only girl her age who believes they are real, despite having never seen them before?

Kathleen secretly believes in the Irish tales of the faerie folk that her mother told her when she was a little girl. When she returns home to Ireland, she is pulled into the world of faerie because of her belief in their existence. She is drawn into the war between faeries, humans, and faerie hunters, creatures that are neither faerie nor human.

Kath may be human and innocent, but she has power inside of her that she is unaware of, power that both faeries and hunters would kill for. It doesn't help that she finds herself falling for the king of the darkest fey in Ireland, fey who would kill her as soon as look at her, and one in particular who would do all he could to destroy her.

Kathleen and Kaevin each have their own problems, and a lot of their problems have nothing to do with each other, but yet they keep finding themselves drawn to each other and fighting to help and protect one another.

This book made it so easy to visualize everything. The characters were not too complex, but the way they develop with the events and the story is interesting and drew me in, making me want to know what they would do or what would happen next.

This book is... bland. I've read a lot of fairy/faye books and I admit my standards are rather high, but this really didn't have to do with the subject matter. I feel like there were a lot of things that just didn't add up. Originally Kath is described as having an American accent? But then it is quite clear that she lives in 'South America'. Which is latin, just for the record. So why is it that all of her 'friends' have English names? I don't feel like the writer did her research at all. And then on top of that, the transitions into scenes are horrible. There is no climatic romance, not epic kiss you've been waiting half the story for. It's just 'blah blah blah, fairy king loves her, blah blah blah, fairy prince wants her'. I found myself forgetting all about the actual storyline and plot because I was so overwhelmed by the poor writing. Also, just for the record, on what strange planet do children or teenagers speak to their parents like Kath does? The dialogue is too formal, especially talking to her friends and parents.

Admittedly, I couldn't bring myself to finish this book. I got about halfway through before I couldn't handle anymore. I wasn't wrapped up in a world of magic or mysteries, I was forcing myself to give it a chance but this book was just unrealistic, inconsistent, and entirely boring in every way possible.

Emerald Fae is an excellent story by a gifted writer. Kalcee Clornel guides readers into a fascinating new world that you won't want to leave. I can't wait to read the sequels.
