When a little engine is blamed for something he didn't do, Thomas becomes determined to clear his name. This full-color storybook, based on the new Thomas & Friends direct to DVD/Blue-ray movie Blue Mountain Mystery, is sure to thrill young boys ages 3-7.
Wilbert Vere Awdry, OBE, better known as the Rev. W. Awdry, was an English clergyman, railway enthusiast and children's author, and creator of Thomas the Tank Engine, who starred in Awdry's acclaimed Railway Series.
The characters that would make Awdry famous, and the first stories featuring them, were invented in 1943 to amuse his son Christopher during a bout of measles. The first book (The Three Railway Engines) was published in 1945, and by the time Awdry stopped writing in 1972, The Railway Series numbered 26 books. Christopher subsequently added further books to the series.
I didn't know that this was based on a movie, so I didn't have that to compare it to. However, I did read the Step Into Reading version of this book at the same time, and this version was vastly superior. My 3 year old loved this story of Thomas who tries to help a new friend Luke figure out what happened when he had first arrived on Sodor and help him remain. He asked for the book over and over, which was okay with me since it was a nice little story with a pretty good message.
If you've watched Blue Mountain Mystery you know the story. This book leaves out all the good drama and makes an exciting denouement in the movie turn into a banal boring yell at Diesel moment.
Such a wonderful Thomas and Friends book! Such life lessons within the story without being in the child's face about them! In this one the child learns that you should always help a friend that you see being stand offish; they maybe shy but they may also be scared and if you are a friend to them they can overcome that sacredness. And also children learn not to spread stories that they overheard because they may not get the full story or the story may not be true!
In the story Thomas helps another engine that has been hiding out all these years because he felt he did something terrible years ago. But in the end Thomas helps him to know that he didn't actually do what he thought and everyone is okay. And Diesel is as mean as he usually is and learns to not repeat stories he over hears.
Normally I hate Thomas books for being too wordy. This one was the exception. Based off the Thomas movie "The Blue Mountain Mystery", we learn the true story of a young Narrow Gauge engine named Luke (which my son has at home, but I'd never heard of him before) and how he believes he is responsible for the yellow engine's fate. As Thomas investigates, he learns the truth and goes to help his new friend Luke from Diesel's treachery. Recommended for ages 3-7, 4 stars.
I'm very glad to see that an Awdry was involved in the writing of this book; I think it helps to maintain the integrity of the story. This story, however, is rather like a xerox copy of an original. On its own it is not bad and might even pass for good, but if you compare it to the original stories, it is easy to see how the quality suffers.
