A very simple retelling of the classic Disney movie. Young fans of the movie will like the book thats just right to read on their own.

This version of Cinderella is based on the French version that was written by Charles Perrault in Histoires ou Contes du Temps Passe in 1697. Cinderella is a girl who lives with her evil stepmother and stepsisters. She is the only one who does all of the chores. The family gets invited to a royal ball, but Cinderella has to finish the chores so she can go. Cinderella's animal friends make a dress for her, but her stepsisters ruin her dress. Does she make it to the ball? This version of Cinderella is perfect for children from preschool to first grade The book is a step into reading level two book, which is reading with help and includes basic vocabulary, short sentences, and simple stories. It is for children who recognize familiar words and sound out new words with help.

“Cinderella is a kind and pretty girl. She has many animal friends” (pg.5). This beginning reader version of the classic Cinderella tale sums up the actual events in an easy to read way. The sentences are simple, words are big and illustrations helps readers put meaning to the words.

I give this Cinderella version 2 stars. Because it is a beginning reader I expected the sentences to be simple, but so many details from the original has been lost. On one particular page (pg.25) it simply states “They take a walk. They fall in love”, how is that even possible? I mean love at first sight is a thing but it is likely children will know the original story and will be disappointed by this watered down version. I will admit I haven't fully watched the Disney movie, but I have a pretty good idea of what has happened to be disappointed with this version. The illustrations on the other hand may have been straight from the animated movie. The great detail on Cinderella’s dress, the beautiful staircase, and the little mouse friends all stood out to me.

This beginning reader version of Cinderella can not only be used in lower grades to assist with learning to read, but can be used in higher grades when learning summarizing. This is an hour or so long movie compressed into a two minute long read and basically tells the exact same story, minus a few details.
