Refusing to celebrate Christmas in his disillusionment, German cobbler Gunther is surprised when visitors to his shop place a candle in his window that they say will light the way for the Christ Child's visit.
Yes, my son is grown, but I had to read the story again like I did every Christmas when he was growing up. This time I read it to my husband.
It's Christmas Eve and a German cobbler is sad and depressed. Some years ago he lost his wife and young son. Christmas makes everything sadder. He barely feels like repairing shoes.
Then he is visited by a woman and two children that set a candle in his window and inform him that he is going to have a very important Visitor. The Christ Child is going to come to see him tonight. Eagerly the man waits. Will he come?
This is a fun retelling of an old folktale my mother used to tell me when I was a child. The illustrations are very good and the message, of course, timeless.
This was a beautiful book based on a story by Leo Tolstoy. I loved how the candle in the window brought the visitors into the shop. Serving people in need is serving our Lord, Jesus Christ. A great story to read at Christmas.
Each December, we wrap our Christmas and winter books so that we can randomly select one each night. This is my husband’s favorite. It is the sweetest story and we love the characters (especially the cute cat in the pictures)! Love reading this book each winter.
