William Burroughs and the Secret of Fascination
William Burroughs is both an object of widespread cultural fascination and one of America’s great original writers. The two mysteries that Oliver Harris explores are how Burroughs became that writer and what fascination itself means. His book is both a work of investigative scholarship that draws on rare access to manuscripts to unearth a secret history behind the received story of Burroughs the writer and an enquiry into the experience of being fascinated, its enigmatic psychology and seductive allure.
Harris examines the major works Burroughs produced in the 1950s—Junky, Queer, The Yage Letters, and Naked Lunch—analyzing them within their cultural history and in relation to the methods of their writing. Piecing together for the first time an accurate, material record of Burroughs’ creative history during his germinal decade as a writer, Harris shows the importance of getting this right. He refutes the “junk paradigm” of addiction and instead reveals how the dark power of Burroughs’s fiction, particularly its sexual and political dimensions, was shaped by the creative energy he invested in his letter writing. As Burroughs said to Allen Ginsberg about Naked Lunch, “the real novel is letters to you.”
Examining a history of epistolary practices from Kafka to Kerouac, Harris reveals the unique nature and economy of Burroughs’ letters. Readers are thus able to recognize the emergence of Burroughs’ true textual politics—not just his writing’s analysis of power, but its own relation to it—within his actual writing practices. Finally, it becomes clear that the discovery of such secrets does not demystify Burroughs, since this discovery is one more response to the enduring power of his fascination.

За последние лет 20 Хэррис вдруг сделался первейшим авторитетом по Барроузу, и недаром. Тот случай, когда навыки пристального чтения, выработанные, видимо, самостоятельно, но наверняка закрепленные в Оксфорде, приносят плоды. Многим нашим критикам хочется сказать: "Хэррис молодец, будь, как Хэррис". Ну а это его основная книжка по Барроузу, охватывающая все вплоть до и включая "Нагой обед". Просто бесценное литературоведение и великолепная текстология, приближающиеся к настоящей детективной работе. Описать ее Хэррис в своем метанарративе тоже умеет, как видно даже по вступительным статьям к "восстановленным текстам" Барроуза.
Так и тут: значительную часть литературоведческого повествования Хэрриса занимают описания приключений тени улыбки Уилла Деннисона, упомянутой в "Городке и городе" Керуака - вплоть до "Нагого обеда" подробно, а дальше как придется. Повесить трехсот-с-лишним страничную монографию на таком призрачном понятии, как "очарование", - это, скажу я вам, высший пилотаж литературоведения, а не обычное академическое пустословие "торговли воздухом". Ну и заодно очертить один из красивейших любовных романов столетия - между Барроузом и Гинзбергом.
...Прекрасный квёрк автора - он все меряет трилогиями. Поневоле начинаешь делить любое творчество на три.
А одно из прямо-таки замечательных наблюдений автора: это что бит-литература практически нацело выросла из экономики писем, со всеми особенностями "эпистолярного идеализма" битников - от нарочитого самообнажения до уязвимости перед госсистемами цензуры и контроля. Из их теплого, лампового аналогово-почтового интернета, как видим, кое-что нетленное все же проросло, а вот из нашего холодного, полупроводникового цифрового (с его тем не менее такой же текстуализацией себя) - хз.
{Кроме этого, тема для чьей-нибудь диссертации - сравнение почтовых систем: американской и всемирной в середине 20 века, которой пользовались биты, советской 80х годов, когда рок-н-ролльный и контркультурный самиздат был нашим аналоговым интернетом, и, например, почты россии, которая ворует и/или теряет все, что попадает к ней в лапы (исключения есть, но редки).}

Good book of Burroughs scholarship, I think its funny that this guy goes out of his way to take the exact opposite opinion of every other person out there who has written about the guys work.
He literally acts like he is just trying to antagonize people. And he is just a bit obsessive. Anyone who is willing to map out alleyways in tangiers is going to far in their fanaticism. I think the guy is a genius and I think that some of the history and backstory behind the works presented here is genius, but this guy goes way overboard.
I could tell you a point exactly, just let me say that this book starts off with a 5+ page analysis of a single photograph of Burroughs standing next to Kerouac in the middle of some random city.
Yeah its like that.
