L'abbandono. Una storia eritrea

Quella che potrebbe essere una normale storia di seduzione e di abbandono si complica per l'intrecciarsi di culture e razze, di vissuti e aspettative tanto diversi. Cosí le ferite individuali diventano disagio delle civiltà, impossibilità di capire la propria sorte e il proprio posto nel mondo, il senso da dare alle gioie, ai dolori, ai sogni. Sellass, la protagonista del romanzo, vive un doppio sradicamento: il rifiuto degli italiani che non vogliono famiglie miste e quello degli eritrei del suo villaggio per i quali è ormai diventata irreparabilmente «diversa». Solo una grande forza di volontà sutura le lacerazioni della donna, e solo la speranza che almeno i suoi figli possano uscire da un mondo di grande solitudine e miseria. Soltanto Marianna, la primogenita di Sellass, fantasiosa e tenace, riuscirà a ribellarsi e ad affrontare una vita, ma porterà con sé il dubbio di una identità irrisolta e la nostalgia di un padre smarrito, che si ostinerà a cercare.

About the author

Erminia Dell'Oro is an Eritrean writer and novelist. Dell'Oro is of Italian ascendancy. She was born on 4 April 1938 in Asmara, the city where she spent the first twenty years of her life. Her paternal grandfather moved from Lecco to Eritrea in 1886 following the colonial adventures of Italians at that time and supported by the Italian government. Her childhood and adolescence was experienced in Eritrea where she grew up under colonial occupation along with her family. At age twenty, Dell'Oro left Eritrea for Milan, where she planned to become a journalist, but worked mainly as a bookseller. Her family and the influences of living under colonialism encouraged her to publish her first autobiographical novel, Asmara Addio in 1988.

This is the story of a young Eritrean woman called Sellass who starts a relationship with an Italian man called Carlo. After she has two children with him he decides to move back to Italy, leaving her alone to raise the children in a politically unstable and sometimes dangerous country. It was quite sad to see how Sellass changed into a really bitter mother who punished her children but I did enjoy reading about the daughter and son growing up and the daughter maturing and realising what she wants to do with her life. The best part for me were the two letters at the end of the book which are real letters from the actual people who the characters of this novel were inspired by. Just loved reading this.

Overall it was a very slow book and I wasn’t dying to pick it up every day, but I did enjoy it and am glad to have read a piece of literature from Eritrea. I also was glad to learn about the colonisation of Eritrea by Italy as I hadn’t heard about it before so definitely appreciated learning about the history of the country.

Veramente non capisco come mai sia così difficile trovare questo libro. L'Abbandono è un libro bellissimo, anche se malinconico e angosciante allo stesso tempo.

Sellas decide un giorno di lasciare il suo paese per cercare fortuna a Massaua. Sono gli anni in cui l'Eritrea è una fiorente colonia italiana, e quando Sellas diventa una bella donna, conosce Carlo, un italiano venuto in Eritrea per cercare fortuna anch'egli dopo aver fallito negli Stati Uniti. Agli uomini italiani è vietato mettersi insieme con le donne eritree, tanto meno avere dei figli. Comunque, Carlo e Sellas si innamorano e mettono al mondo Marianna e Gianfranco. Marianna e Gianfranco sono belli ma, essendo meticci, sono disprezzati dagli eritrei e non riconosciuti come legittimi cittadini italiani. È qui che questo romanzo diventa la bella ma angosciante storia dei meticci italo-eritrei che non appartengono a nessun posto.

Fra Massaua e Asmara, L'Abbandono narra la dura e triste storia di Sellas, Carlo, Gianfranco e specialmente Marianna, ma anche dell'Eritrea, dall'epoca dorata della colonia italiana all'inizio dell'invasione etiope. Se vi è piaciuto Cristo si è fermato a Eboli, vi consiglio questo romanzo.

I truly don’t understand why it is so difficult to find this book. L'Abbandono is a beautiful book, although melancholic and distressing at the same time.

One day, Sellas decides to leave his country to seek his fortune in Massawa. These are the years when Eritrea is a flourishing Italian colony, and when Sellas becomes a beautiful woman, she meets Carlo, an Italian who came to Eritrea to seek his fortune after failing in the United States. Italian men are forbidden to associate with Eritrean women, let alone have children with them. Nevertheless, Carlo and Sellas fall in love and have Marianna and Gianfranco. Marianna and Gianfranco are beautiful but, being mixed-race, they are despised by Eritreans and not recognized as legitimate Italian citizens. It is here that this novel becomes the beautiful yet distressing story of the Italian-Eritrean mixed-race individuals who belong nowhere.

Between Massawa and Asmara, L'Abbandono tells the harsh and sad story of Sellas, Carlo, Gianfranco, and especially Marianna, as well as that of Eritrea, from the golden era of the Italian colony to the beginning of the Ethiopian invasion. If you liked Cristo si è fermato a Eboli, I recommend this novel.

emozionante, ho pianto almeno 2 volte. ho imparato qualcosa di cui non avevo ancora mai sentito: il colonialismo italiano in Etiopia. Soprattutto molto realistico. Il libro riporta un pezzo di storia importantissimo ma di cui purtroppo si parla poco, raccontandolo attraverso le vicende e i dolori di una famiglia mista, italo-etiope. bellissimo. profondo. poetico.

Una stellina per l'ambientazione, da cui traspare tutto l'amore dell'autrice per questa terra. Per il resto, non ci siamo affatto: eventi importantissimi liquidati in una manciata di righe, personaggi di carta velina, che o sono insignificanti o insopportabili, virgole che a volte spariscono senza motivo. Per me è no.
