In his time, Andrew Murray was alarmed by how few believers lived wholeheartedly for God and truly displayed to the world the abundant life promised by Jesus Christ. More than a century later, Christians are still living powerless, impoverished spiritual lives, and a media-savvy world dismisses the church as irrelevant. One of the most powerful voices of the nineteenth century, Murray speaks to today’s church from across the years, exhorting us to begin each day by seeking the living God, giving Him time every morning to reveal Himself anew. For this stunning new devotional, contemporary bestselling author Bruce Wilkinson presents 365 gems from the treasury of writings by Andrew Murray. Each month features the very best of Murray’s work centering on a different aspect of cultivating a deeper and richer spiritual life.

Murray was Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Murray became a noted missionary leader. His father was a Scottish Presbyterian serving the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa, and his mother had connections with both French Huguenots and German Lutherans. This background to some extent explains his ecumenical spirit. He was educated at Aberdeen University, Scotland, and at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. After ordination in 1848 he served pastorates at Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town, and Wellington. He helped to found what are now the University College of the Orange Free State and the Stellenbosch Seminary. He served as Moderator of the Cape Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church and was president of both the YMCA (1865) and the South Africa General Mission (1888-1917), now the Africa Evangelical Fellowship.
He was one of the chief promoters of the call to missions in South Africa. This led to the Dutch Reformed Church missions to blacks in the Transvaal and Malawi. Apart from his evangelistic tours in South Africa, he spoke at the Keswick and Northfield Conventions in 1895, making a great impression. upon his British and American audiences. For his contribution to world missions he was given an honorary doctorate by the universities of Aberdeen (1898) and Cape of Good Hope(1907).
Murray is best known today for his devotional writings, which place great emphasis on the need for a rich, personal devotional life. Many of his 240 publications explain in how he saw this devotion and its outworking in the life of the Christian. Several of his books have become devotional classics. Among these are Abide in Christ, Absolute Surrender, With Christ in the School of Prayer, The Spirit of Christ and Waiting on God.
I have been “a long time gone” from posting any book reviews, intending to write several, having now read more-than -everal “daily devotionals” that are superb in my opinion. My intention morphed, however, because so many highlights were exquisite that the idea became entirely too daunting. This is my first attempt to chisel away some of “the daunt.”
This “daily reader” is organized into twelve months, each entitled as secrets: January contains readings on the The Secret of Adoration; February on The Secret of New Life in Christ; March on The Secret of the Cross; April on The Secret of a Life of Faith; May on The Secret of Power From on High; June on The Secret of Fellowship with God; July on The Secret of The Throne of Grace; August on The Secret of Intercession; September on The Secret of Inspiration; October on The Secret of United Prayer; November on The Secret of Brotherly Love; and December culminates them all with readings on Abiding Presence.
The overall urging of this author is for believers to get personal and meet daily with the Maker of Everything: to get to know Him (not just about Him) and to enjoy the benefits of divine guidance and actual help. What he calls The Morning Watch is what I call Coffee with Jesus, and I agree with him that, whatever you call it, the result of proof that we don’t need to settle for meager fellowship with God. Murray shares convincingly that the mysteries of Christ are revealed to us by the Spirit of God in our souls. As Christ is formed in us, He dwells in us, works in us – and through us. And so we become “worthy temples of His glory” – not because of us; because of Him.
Other “daily readers” for which I hope to post reviews include: Daily Open Windows by T. Austin-Sparks; Echoes of Eternity by Hal Helms; He Whispers Your Name by Cherie Hill; In Christ by E. Stanley Jones; Jesus Calling by Sarah Young; and My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers.
Antiquated but refreshing. Of the very many devotionals on the market, I've found this one quite refreshing, even though translated from the Dutch of over a hundred years ago. Many of his readings are quite personal, seeming to come from a personal journal, but Andrew Murray was a powerful force for the Lord in his time, and that comes through in this devotional.
Andrew Murray has a way of opening the Scriptures as to make them clear and inspire the reader. I have enjoyed this journey with this daily devotional.
Daily in His Presence, a Classic Devotional from ONE of the most Powerful voices of the Nineteenth Century, by Andrew Murray with Bruce Wilkinson, Multnomah Books, 400 Pages, ISBN-13: 978-1601424037, $16.99
Dr. Murray penned this classic devotional over a twenty year period in the 1850’s. He designed it to encourage South African farmers “ongoing spiritual revival.” Farmers came to church and communion once a month. At that time Murray gave them thirty days of devotions until it was time for them to return. This led to the greatest spiritual revival in recorded African history ever known.
Andrew Murray is an excellent Christian Writer and Teacher. This is a daily devotional which will lead you into a much deeper relationship with God. It is warm and deep, yet easy to read and understand. The entries are short and end with an appropriate (topical) prayer.
