Avelia Warbler wakes from two years of magical healing with a price on her head and the minions of a bloodthirsty cult dogging her heels. The world has changed while she slept, and that sleep has changed her as well. Now a sixty-year-old woman in a twenty-year-old body, she must dodge assassins, bounty hunters, and the ghosts of her own past on her way to a sorcerous labyrinth of recollection where the face of her greatest enemy lies hidden.
The Sharp Edge of Memory is the first novel in a trilogy, the Aveliad, as well as the second novel of the Warbler Family Chronicles. It is preceded by The Last Tragedy, but can be read independently.
Mr. Mallette again proves he's got the chops for epic fantasy in spades. His worldbuilding just continues to add depth, dimension and wonder to this fantastic, yet deadly world.
His characters are so human it's scary. Avelia Warbler has got to be one of my all time favorite characters in any genre of writing. She has been around the block a few times, so she knows what she is doing. She is brutally honest with herself, and always humble, but directly does what needs to get done - whether it helps herself, a friend, or the world. Her exploits should be legendary, but no one but her family, friends and top government officials know. She is an explorer, an adventurer, an expert swordsman, a hunter, a strategist, a philanthropist, a loving aunt, a storyteller, a risk taker, a person of strong backbone and a force for everything that's good.
You have to read The Last Tragedy for this novel to have the level of meaning that it should. This story focuses on Avelia and her continued struggle against the Cimonites two years after the events in The Last Tragedy have taken place. She pops out of a tree, naked and confused, looking thirty years younger, only to find herself facing two armed burglars.
The excitement and suspense of the story never let up. New wonders abound in the glorious world that Mallette has created. Whether it is a new land, new magic, new types of people, or just Avelia being herself, the series is now one of my favorites.
Bottom Line: Get The Last Tragedy and read it. If you like epic fantasy, I guarantee that you will be dying to read this one, and the next two as well. I am off to get the next book. Highly Recommended!
Oops. I read this and moved on to the next book so fast that I type this as I've almost finished the last book. Which is pretty much all the review you need.
As I was prepping this one for publication, I was reminded how much I enjoy some of the characters and scenes. It's a story about heroism, so if you prefer morally ambiguous protagonists, you should probably lop a couple of stars off my rating.
I truly enjoyed this story! It was a fun adventure with excellently developed characters and I could not put it down. I finished and immediately ordered the third in the series on my Kindle. It is a fun read and a well-crafted story. You should check the series out!
