A thorough, illustrated biography discussing the president's childhood, his career, his family, and his term as President of the United States. Includes a time line and glossary.
The Father of the U.S. Navy was an abolitionist and civil rights attorney. He was wealthy, well-dressed, loved feasts and put stained-glass in the White House. He supported the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act against the spoils system that he benefited from for many years.
I have reviewed each of the presidential books in this series for young children and have been greatly please with the collection. Elementary and Junior High classrooms and libraries would benefit from having it on their shelves. Each book has nice pictures, political cartoons, chronological small chapters describing the life of each president, a glossary, and interesting facts listed in the margins (my favorite part).
This particular one on Chester A. Arthur was done very well. The only criticism I had was the lack of information on his childhood. It was almost as it he was born, then attended college. On the last page of the book, one the interesting facts stated "Before he died, Chester Arthur had all of his personal papers destroyed. This has left historians with many unanswered questions about his life." This fact should have been mentioned a little sooner, to understand the reason for the gaps in information.
