After nearly five years in federal prison, ex-New Orleans vice cop Ray Shane doesn't want any trouble. But trouble is exactly what he gets when four masked gunmen rob The House of the Rising Sun, the mob-owned casino and brothel where Shane is in charge of security, and blow away the mentally handicapped, adult nephew of the New Orleans mafia boss. Shane catches most of the blame and finds out from mob strongman Tony Zello that the only way he can clear himself is to find the gunmen and get back the money. But as Shane starts investigating, he finds out that he is the mob's main suspect.
I did not have high expectations when I picked up this novel to read; I really only chose it due to the title. I love the Animals version of the song. The book was really enjoyable. The pace was good, the author keeps it interesting and fairly light. He provides you with enough back story without sharing all the details of everyone's pasts.
A gritty mafia-based crime novel. Pretty cliche and predictable. Entertaining read, but nothing to write home about. It's pretty much the same kind of crime story we've been reading and watching on TV for 50 years. If that's up your alley, then you'll like this book. If you're looking for something that isn't more of the same, you'll probably be disappointed.
