Do Unto Others

Rate this book
Jim Cornell used to believe in God.

But when things went bad - his daughter getting cancer, his layoff from his well-paying job, the strain of his marriage - he began to have no use for God anymore.

When Jim's forced into a situation that will require his participation in another man's murder, his faith will be tested. Because while Jim used to believe in God, he'd never given that much thought to the Devil.

Now he's going to have to. Because, like it or not, Jim is involved with people who have a deep religious faith, too.

Jim is about to discover that where there is light, there must be darkness. There's more than one kind of religious faith, and his is about to be put to the ultimate test.

I have been going through the dark and dusty corners of my Kindle closet and reading some novellas and novels that languished here. I am finding most of them to be hidden treasures, and this one is no exception.

I found this to be a pretty in-depth character study. Putting aside the supernatural threat, this was a very realistic and sympathetic exploration of the ebb and flow of the thoughts and emotions of the tortured protagonist.

I have read several by Mr. Gonzalez, who passed away in 2014. I can also recommend “Primative” which is a very interesting take on the zombie mythos.

Good novella.

This story was incredible, well written with a protagonist i could relate to. This moved quick, and was over before i knew it. I had one issue with this though, and that is the ending. I don't need things spelled out for me generally, but a little more information at the end would have been nice. I love almost everything Mr. Gonzalez has written, but this left me a little lukewarm.

What would you do to save the life of your daughter? Would you forsake your religious beliefs and turn to the dark side if you knew the outcome would result in not only saving a life, but saving your marriage and ending any and all financial worries, past, present and future? These are exactly the questions J.F. Gonzalez brings to light in his page-turning dark novella "Do Onto Others" and you will not know the answers until literally the very last page.

Short and face paced, Gonzalez creates a one two punch, of one man who wrestles with his soul about doing what is right, and what is right by his family. The prose is clean and neat, and the characters are fleshed out nicely. Very satisfying novella.
