I had a mellow time reading this book. Liam and Carly were absolutely perfect for each other. The way Liam kept closing up and Carly trying to loosen him up just about breaks my heart.

Absolutely a lovely story, I even shed a few tears towards the end. Would love to read the sequel, In the Rancher's Footsteps by Kay Stockham next.

I am always confused when it comes to the release dates of Harlequin romances. The Sheriff’s Daughter was up for grabs at Netgalley & states the release date as the 10th of this month. But a visit to the author’s website revealed that this book has already been released this September. Regardless of all this confusion, The Sheriff’s Daughter turned out to be a surprisingly wonderful & heartwarming romance, filled with endearing characters that worm their way into your hearts and impact you in a way that makes you remember them even long after you are done with the story.

This is the 1st book in a new series entitled as North Star, Montana Series. Based in the small town of North Star in Montana, this series focuses on the three adopted boys Liam, Brad and Chance of the McKenna family. The Sheriff’s Daughter tells the story of Liam, the boy who used to get into all sorts of trouble, who grows into a man who carries the sort of deep emotional wounds that one would never fathom that the now calm and controlled Deputy Sheriff of North Star to have.

Liam and Carly meet each other in high school during their freshmen year, Carly growing up as the daughter of the town’s sheriff and as the town sweetheart whilst Liam had grown up in foster care ever since he turned five years old, his belligerence stemming from the fact that his mother had never wanted anything to do with him. Carly has her own demons to conquer with her mother abandoning her while she was young. The hurt that has never completely faded away is one reason why Carly is so adamant on becoming a foster mother, going so far as to completing all the paperwork that would pave the way for her.

When Carly’s father goes on a two week vacation, Liam is under orders to see to Carly’s welfare, to see to it that she doesn’t get into any sort of trouble while the Sheriff is away. Carly revels in the freedom of not having her father around for the first time in her 27 years of life and gets into a bit of trouble here and there, just not enough to warrant Liam breathing down her neck, enticing her into forgetting that she has never before had the hots for her friend since high school.

Liam tries so damn hard to keep his hands off of Carly, but the temptation she presents just by existing is too hard for him to deny. Though Liam knows that he has nothing to offer for someone like Carly who shines with an inner goodness that has landed her in her fair share of trouble in the past, Liam cannot say no to the answering need that blazes to life in Carly as one kiss turns into two and something much more than either of them bargained for.

The Sheriff’s Daughter is a very well done first book for an enticing series that I am definitely going to be keeping an eye out for. Kay Stockham though a new author for me didn’t make me feel like a stranger to her writing. Her way of telling a story leaves no room for the reader to back out, but rather invites one to make herself at home and see where Kay’s characters are going to lead you. I loved the way Kay seemed to know just which buttons to push when it came to both Liam and Carly and absolutely reveled in all the emotionally-charged encounters that Kay delivers so very well.

Liam is a hero that each and every one of us is bound to fall for. Strong, silent and handsome with a tortured soul that deep down inside wants love and is afraid to ask for it, Liam’s brooding nature makes for a very enticing hero. His control which always snaps when it comes to Carly was so darn fun to watch, the way he tries to hold himself together around her and fails so miserably, lets just say that I was grinning throughout it all!

Carly is such a wonderful heroine who managed to make me fall in love with her right from the very start. With her heart always in the right place, all Carly wants is a stable home and a man who would stand by her side and children that she can love and grow old with. Though Liam tempts her in ways she has never been tempted before, Carly’s one hard and fast rule in relationships has always been to never date someone whose a cop. But for Liam, Carly finds herself breaking all the rules, defying every reason that she stay away from him because deep down inside Carly knows that Liam is the one for her. And though Liam might push her away, Carly knows that he needs her more than she needs him.

It was heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time to see Carly’s struggles as a foster mother, an aspect of the novel that I found really interesting. There were no short cuts to handling becoming a foster mother for the first time, the troubles Carly faced seeming all too real which lends the story that quality that makes it hard to put down. Liam who is adamant that Carly remain as far away as possible from foster parenting finds himself tied to a woman whose big heart refuses to do that, forcing Liam face his worst nightmares and open up wounds that are better left unopened.

There is not one character within the story that doesn’t lend something extra to it, making this contemporary romance a very well rounded one. The passion between Carly and Liam is of the toe-curling variety, one that made my senses come alive and hum in anticipation every single time. Kay certainly knows how to deliver on all the sexual tension she creates so well, and I for one ended up very satisfied with how she dealt with their passion, the romance and of course the happily ever after.

The ending which came with a lot of surprising twists and turns paves the way for the next story in the series. Brad, the steadfast member of the McKenna family who has to butt heads with the daughter of his foster father who never acknowledged her father’s existence when he was alive. The sparks I believe will surely fly & I am expecting a lot of emotional grittiness from the story, knowing how well Kay can deliver a good dose of angst with her stories if this book is anything to judge her style by.

Recommended for fans of Harlequin Superromances, fans of Kay Stockham and fans of romances with a small town setting, The Sheriff’s Daughter is an intense read that delivers on all counts.

When I started this book I knew it was part of a series but not the fact that the heroine in this one appears as a troubled, confused teenager in the previous instalment that is her father's story.

Carly is the Sheriff's daughter and now that her father is on vacation, everyone keeps to keeping an eye on her especially Liam the one in charge. Liam and Carly have been on friendly terms for years but not really close.

Carly decides to become a foster parent to find out if she can be a mother, she has doubts because her own mother abandoned her and she wonders if she is the same. When Liam hears about it, he asks does her father know, he actually doesn't but Carly is not budging. Liam who himself was in the system until he was adopted at fifteen says she is only setting herself up for pain & that foster kids are too hurt, broken and violent for her.

Liam wasn't always such a model citizen and he has mastered emotional distance, he thinks that helps in his job and doesn't see that he loves his adopted brothers and father instead he sees the way he became hardened and hurt his foster parents hurting them before they could.

I liked their relationship and how it progresses, Liam tells her he doesn't want kids and she tells him at that point that she isn't sure she wants them, their doubts & especially Liam's old memories of being abused come to the surface when he sees a kid just like him. I liked seeing Liam see that he wasn't alone and he cared, that process does take time and takes a huge loss.

I enjoyed the book a lot & want to read about the other two brothers.

Why indeed!

Another amazing book to 'Montana Secrets' book 3 featuring foster-care and found-family themes, with Caroline "Carly" Taggert and Deputy Liam McKenna.

I loved the mystery about this story from cover to cover. I liked how Carly wanted to take in foster kids, not really knowing the ins-and-outs of what kind of families they would be coming from - sad to say the least. It's like you want to step into the story and walk along with the characters, each having their own story.

Carly was a girl who can take care of herself. She doesn't need a bunch of die-hard guys to watch over her while her father is out of town.

Liam, on the other hand, was a tough kind of guy who wore a badge but was hard to heal his heart. He was set in his ways, without a doubt.

We all know that there is a happy ending to this book, even with the webs finally being cleared from the closets.

In the end, six year old Riley gets new parents and he gets a new baby brother: "Zane Jonas Charles McKenna."

I can't wait to read the next book in this series, the name speaks for itself. How in God's green country is a Burbank-loving, California-dreaming, city girl going to feel when she can no longer resist a Montana-loving, slow-burning, only-kissing rancher when her three months is up. Who is the winning prize?

Time to read one more chapter, so be happy and enjoy the magic.

Caroline (Carly) and Liam

Liam can't believe his eyes, what is she doing out here by herself? Straggling down the road - wait without shoes on? He pulls over and tries to get information from her, but, of course she refuses to tell him who did this to her. Thankfully, she's fully clothed and swears nothing happened to her! If her daddy, his boss finds out... Carly refuses to give Liam the answers he wants, not to be difficult, but she can handle herself. Roger Billings, newly divorced and missing his kids, she figured he was a safe date, boy was she wrong! With her daddy, Jonas, the Sheriff and her momma, Rissa gone for two weeks looks like he thought he had an easy pass. Nope! What does Liam try to talk her out of doing? What happens to Zane, Liam's adopted father? What about Charlie? So much happens in two weeks! What happens when Jonas returns? This story by Kay Lyons will keep you reading!

The Sheriff's Daughter is a fun romance by Kay Stockham. Deputy Liam McKenna is tasked with keeping the Sheriff's daughter out of trouble while he's away for 2 weeks. Carly doesn't try to get in trouble, it just seems to find her sometimes. When Carly signs up to be a foster parent without anyone knowing, things go a little crazy. Carly and Liam's story is full of drama, humor, spice. The Sheriff's Daughter is book 3 of the North Star, Montana Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliffhanger.

I read a print copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Nice story

Interesting characters. Carly, who was introduced in an earlier book, is the daughter of the sheriff and she becomes interested in his assistant sheriff. Carly also becomes approved as a foster parent. Her decisions create issues for her family and new boyfriend.

Hold on Tight

Carey was the Sheriff's daughter. When he went on vacation, the sheriff put Liam in charge of both his office and keeping his daughter out of trouble. She pulled Liam kicking and fighting into life again. BB

Did she want a cop or to be a mom?

This was a heartbreak to read in some chapters. In others it wad a happy read. Together they made a wonderful romance. It's well written and even though I needed a few tissues it was a great read.

Liam and Carly

A very good tale of abuse and understanding how to accept the past and get on with the future plus the acceptance of communication. Two lonely people searching for family and being afraid. Find each other

Romantic and moving

The whole story took a while to get going. Once it did, boy and girl, and emotional baggage slowly became unraveled while love blossomed. Gritty, sexy, rewarding. Just a few words that come to mind. A good read.

Touching though at times heartbreaking.

A wonderful addition to the series. Liam’s background and childhood memories are heartbreaking. Can Carly show him they are with the risk.
Another winner in the series.

Deputy Liam McKenna is a nice guy. He is the kind of guy you want to be your friend, the one who will always come when you call. You would trust him with your life, your money and even your baby sister. But fate just keeps tossing temptation in front of him; so how long does he think he can ignore it?

Just being that good guy gets him the job of looking after his boss, the sheriff’s, daughter; his sexy, tempting, uncontrollable daughter. For Liam, Carly Taggert is that itch that just won’t go away. Finding her hobbling on home with ripped clothing, a sprained ankle, and an attitude the results of a date gone very wrong, only adds to the temptation and brings out the ugly side of him…this guy is going to pay for whatever he did even before the sheriff can get to him! Jealous, confused and tempted, Liam's life is now spinning out of control.

But Carly has a dream that doesn’t quite mix with Liam’s plans. Carly wants to be a mother! By applying to be a foster parent, Carly sets her dream in motion much to the dismay of Liam. He knows the foster care system, he is an adopted child out of foster care but he was one of the lucky ones. He knows what can happen to a child in the system and he would like to spare Carly the heartbreak and disappointment he knows is headed her way.

Just as their relationship gets started and heated after an unexpected kiss, a young child is delivered to her door and throws her new world into a spin. While Liam tries to understand and except Carly’s decisions, their new found relationship takes a hard hit and is relegated to the back burner. Heartbreak, heartache, family, careers and total confusion are in store for these two lovers but will they ever find their happily ever after?

I do admit I had a difficult time with the beginning of this story. It moved slowly and the dialogue was not very engaging but it did pick up steam as it went along. Unfortunately by then my interest in the hero and his girl had waned. A sub-plot, though, was a well formulated surprise and completely engaged me so that by the end of the story I was a more entertained than I had thought I would be.

The characters are gutsy and stubborn and a perfect match for each other. Liam really is that great guy that is just afraid to take that first step, but wishes he does..watch out!! Carly is the indulged, intelligent girl that was everyone’s kid sister who unexpectedly grew up. But she did manage to catch the eye and the heart of the one great guy. Sit down and enjoy a few hours with a great guy and his girl!

Deputy Liam McKenna knows a woman limping down the highway after midnight on a Friday night means trouble, but he’s not prepared for the trouble to be Caroline “Carly” Taggert, the daughter of his boss, Sheriff Jonas Taggert. Jonas and his wife are on a two-week cruise, and hours earlier the sheriff gave orders for Liam to keep an eye on Carly. What neither the sheriff nor Carly knows is that Liam is fighting to keep his eyes off Carly.

Liam knows that Carly is the ring-on-her-finger, picket-fence-and kids type, and she’s the last thing a guy like him, so scarred by abuse and abandonment that even thirteen years as the adopted son of rancher Zane McKenna has not healed him, needs. Her insistence on being a foster mother and opening herself to a world of hurt just proves how foolish she is. He may not be able to stop thinking about her, but he knows they’re all wrong for each other.

Carly wants an uncomplicated man with a safe job. Liam McKenna fails to meet either criteria, and then he refuses to understand her need to be a foster mother, to give kids a safe place and to prove to herself that she has the parenting skills her own mother lacked. Liam McKenna is not the man for her. If only she could forget about his kisses.

Carly and Liam’s story weaves together threads about the definition of family, the challenge of overcoming the past, the need for forgiveness, and the power of love. Carly’s great heart and honesty make her an appealing heroine, and readers of Montana Skies will enjoy seeing the awkward, endearing teenager all grown up. Liam may seem too stubborn at times, but his integrity and the wounded child that remains a part of him is sure to tug heartstrings. This is another of Kay Stockham’s stories that is as much about how families are made as it is about the romance between a man and a woman. Stockham satisfies on both counts.

Town Deputy + Sheriff's Daughter = Secret Romance

In Kay Stockham's New Release, Liam McKenna, Town Deputy is given an assignment to keep an eye on the Sheriff's daughter Carly, while the Sheriff is away. Keeping his eyes on her isn't going to be the problem, its keeping his hands OFF of her that might get in the way. But this quick fling quickly turns out to be more than Liam, a quiet guy with past secrets that keep getting in the way of his happiness. Carly wants things with Liam that he doesn't think that he can give her, so where will that leave them when the Sheriff gets back into town?

The Sheriff's Daughter is a sweet story that shines on why it is important to help others in finding the love that they might never have encountered, and to taking a chance because you never know what kind of blessing is waiting for you just around the corner.

I enjoyed the budding romance between Liam and Carly, and how the author brings the past in slowly, building up to the action, or when things fall apart. She writes a sweet story about the romance but also hits on some serious issues and how sometimes all it takes is a little LOVE and a healthy home.

Really good read and keep an eye out for the next two installments in the North Star, MT series, In the Ranchers Footsteps and Christmas in Montana.

I wish I had read her other books. You don't need to for the story, but it would be fun to read them now.

Zane boss the sheriff has gone a 2 week cruise and left Zane in charge. He also told them to keep his daughter out of trouble.

First night he is out patrolling when he sees a women walking alone on back road. Usually its either someone with broken down car or prostute. He realizes it's Carly right off. Carly does not want to tell him why she is out thier alone walking in high heels. Carly admits her date got out of hand and she took care of it, not to call her father. Carly is 27 years old.

Next night she is waiting for her date at the movie theater when Zane shows up. He arrested her date and he had drugs in his car bragging that they were ruining his date that night.

Carly is just becomming a foster parent and starts with a 8 month old. Her father doesn't want her to do it. Zane warns her. She wants to see if she will be a good mother since her mother abandoned her.

Zane was a foster kid and he has lots of issues still from childhood.

It's a good story about family. Children dealing with being a foster kid and parent. I would read more from Kay Stockham. I was given this ebook in exchange for a honest review.

he was a foster kid adopted by a single man who adopted 2 other boys, the 3 became brothers
he grew up and was a cop

the sheriffs daughter grew up with him in school, but they were just friends

the sheriff went out of town and told the cops to keep a eye on his daughter

the cop really liked her but didnt want to get married and have kids like she did due to his upbringing, he was abused as a child.

she became a foster mom and it was really hard when the kids left

he went to a domestic and they were both killed and he found the little boy she had fostered

his adopted dad died, left part of the ranch to the 3 sons but his daughter, who he never had contact with, was left the best part of the ranch with water rights, but she had to live there 3 months or sell the million dollar property to the 3 sons for 100,000

the cop asked the sheriffs daughter to marry him and she said yes

the old man he didnt like turned out to be his dad and they are getting to learn more about each other

i would read more of this series

A story about Carly, the Sheriff's daughter. Since Rissa and Jonas got married and are away for two weeks on their honeymoon, the Sheriff's officers are to be watching out for his daughter Carly. She is terrible about picking men and Liam, one of the deputies seems to keep getting her out of trouble or maybe he get's into more trouble with Carly. A cute romantic story about how hands off turns out to be hands on for the the brother from the nearby ranch turned deputy. Carly, whose Mom left her father and her at a young age, wants to prove she isn't going to turn out like her mom by becoming a foster parent. Liam was adopted and because of his 'hard luck' life, doesn't understand and doesn't want to be a parent. A endearing story about how they work through both of their past's and face Sheriff Jonas and wife Rissa, when they return home.

This is a relatively clean romance, set in a small town Montana. She’s the daughter of the sheriff (who is off on a 2 week cruise with her step-mom). Carly is determined to become a mother in any way possible, so she signs up to be a foster parent. Deputy sheriff and former foster child Liam McKenna (who is supposed to be keeping a close eye on her while the parents cruise) knows she’s headed for heartbreak. Liam was also adopted by a ranch owner, along with his 2 co-hort fosters. Former actions are coming to a boil while the sheriff is gone cruising. It all plays out with very interesting twists … and sequels to follow.

Snappy and spicy, with characters that pop, Ms Stockham has done a great job...one that I won't soon forget :) You can rest assured that I will be keeping my eyes peeled for more from her in the future.
