This book deals with the conspiracy against Hitler by his Generals in the Spring of 1938 that nearly resulted in a coup d'etat, by which Hitler sought to establish his ascendancy over the Wehrmacht. The account focuses on sensational events centering around Hitler's successful efforts to oust the War minister, and the Army commander In Chief in order to consolidate control of the military in his own hands.
A fascinating account of a massively-important yet little appreciated event in the days before World War II. However, as fascinating as the machinations of Hitler, his chief lieutenants and the Gestapo against the leadership of the Wehrmacht is, the book gets so deep into the smallest and most intricate of details that it can become a real slog to read. At times it’s almost a minute-by-minute account of so-and-so calling so-and-so who in turn informs so-and-so, surrounded by suppositions on the exact moment when information changes hands or is discovered. Recommended only for the most serious students of the most Byzantine aspects of the pre-war Third Reich.
