Revival and Reform in Islam: A Study of Islamic Fundamentalism

Rate this book
This authoritative book argues that what is considered today to be Islamic fundamentalism is inconsistent with the true meaning of this faith. Rahman demonstrates that the true roots of Islamic teachings advocate adaptability, creativity, and innovation.

Had Fazlur Rahman lived a little longer to complete it as it was intended, it would have been another of his magnum opus. Nevertheless, it is still a great survey of fundamentalist reform, starting from the formative periods to the medieval and fairly modern times upto Shah Wali Ullah and Sheikh Ahmed Sirhindi. The insights presented in the book are original with great room for further developments.

The revival and reform movements in islam isn't confined to two persons. Imam Gazali and Ibn Thaimiya made their contributions to islam but it could not be contrasted like that one Fazlur rahman uses in his work. Discussing partial details on both Al Gazali and Ibn thaimiya with a comparison of both is misleading. The whole discussion is mount on the concept of Irja' which is not a much good point to mount upon. anyway, This book will add one more mirror to your insights about Islamic thought.

I found it very dense (had to reread some sections a few times to fully comprehend them), but like his other writings, brilliant and unique.
