About the author

Shirley Hughes is the illustrator of more than two hundred children’s books and has won many prestigious awards, including the Kate Greenaway Medal twice. She is the author-illustrator of DON'T WANT TO GO! and OLLY AND ME 1 2 3. She died at her home in London on the 25th of February, 2022.

KS1- Year 2

English: Rewrite the story from Mrs Dean’s point of view. Carry out some role play activities in which the pupils play different characters. What questions might you want to ask them and what might they ask each other?

Science: One night the water from a leaking drain froze on the pavement in the street. Can you explain why water changes state in this way? The children had fun sliding over the ice. Why is it easier to slide around on ice?

PSHE: Making a snow lady with the name ‘Mrs Mean’ wasn’t a very nice thing to do. How would this have made Mrs Dean feel if she had have seen it?

There is a certain sameness to Shirley Hughes' books. Her style I guess is very distinctive. It seems old fashioned I suppose. This story has the classic ""mean"" old lady living next door to kids. She doesn't like their dog. She doesn't like their noisy games. And she doesn't like all those kids sitting on her fence. The kids of course have their own nickname for her, and make fun of her. But will they get caught
