I picked this one up at a library book sale. It is a really good reference book, though I was hoping its focus would be more on historic, traditional beliefs; it is still a really good reference book nonetheless. My favorite essays are "Lakota Genesis: The Oral Tradition," by Elaine A. Jahner; "The Sacred Pipe in Modern Life," by Arval Looking Horse; and "The Lakota Sun Dance: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives," by Arthur Amiotte. Mr. Amiotte's illustrations are a plus as well. Overall, I would rate this book a 4.5. It would be of interest to people wanting to know more about traditional beliefs and the history of the Sioux and the Christian religious tradition.
