Rabbit thinks he's the cleverest animal in the forest. But can he prove that to Fox, Gator, and Bear? Rabbit needs to pull the best trick of all, without getting caught . . . or eaten! In these African American Rabbit tales, YOU decide what happens next! Six journeys to follow! Which will YOU take?
I am delighted at this. It takes the Choose YOur Own Adventure trope and uses it for Graphic NOvel. Ingenius! And in a familiar sandbox too (that seems cleaned up a bit). It inhabits the world of Brer Rabbit/Song of the South. It cleans up and straightens out the language a bit to remove the kind of "accent-speak" from the original to a more modern town...yet it seriously keeps the mood and sinister happenings of these creatures. You being cast as Brother Rabbit trying to survive in a world where a vicious fox toys with you about wanting to eat you...and then seeing that it does happen...a lot. It made me feel the same way I felt when I saw Song of the South...scared...fearful...creeped out. They pick him up and eat you...it's YOU. And this happens when you make a bad choice. The graphic novel mode of this really sells it. And the art and character designs are just fantastic. Love the nice detail of fox's tail that lazily flops all over the place. Bear and Croc are indeed really menacing. Can't wait to get to more of the series.
Brother Rabbit thinks he is so clever because he is always playing tricks on the other animals in the woods. He is shocked when Brother Fox tells him the other animals think that Fox is the cleverest animal, not Rabbit. Brother Rabbit is on a mission to set the animals straight. That may mean playing tricks and Rabbit may end up getting in to trouble. His course of action is up to the reader. This plot-your-own story graphic novel contains either a one-page text and one-page graphic text two-page spread or a one-page text and one-page story direction selection option two-page spread. Story direction selection pages are brightly colored with a purple background and blue, green, orange and/or yellow textboxes. Direction arrows on each page indicate to which page the reader should turn. The Tricky Rabbit Tales is the second book in the six book Tricky Journeys series. Titles base stories on tales and animals from classic folktales. Brother Rabbit is much like Brer Rabbit from African American folktales. Illustrations really gave the book life. Text is lacking as stories are too short. The small stories within the book seem rushed and choppy. Not recommended.
This is "choose your own adventure" but in graphic novel form. This is a great way to present or even introduce children to trickster tales. This is just one of six in the series and a child can spend hours exploring the different avenues he/she can choose for the rabbit. This is great for reluctant readers because of the illustrations and format.
