Lezama Lima writes what may be the most "out" poetry I've ever read: the turns and the changes come so fast, and with such disregard for the images preceding and following. Beautiful and strange, mind-opening to the possibilities of baffling sequence. A Costa Rican friend asked me on Christmas eve what I was reading and I told him Lezama Lima. "That doesn't even make any sense in Spanish," he replied. Gotcha.

Many of the translations are herculean, but doing a monolingual edition of a poet like Lezama is always going to be problematic.
