Picked this book from my shelf of library book sale volumes this evening. Seems good for a rainy evening read. It's the first in a mystery series set in Missouri by this author, who I just discovered died last October. She had published other books in the past.
A bit of a lighter read than some, enjoyable & I'll look for more in this series. There are some parallels between the author's life & the situations in the book, having read her official bio. This includes her getting back into writing & publishing with encouragement from friends & colleagues, after a long "dry spell" following a previous successful writing career.
When one of the neighbors is brutally murdered, her part-time handyman is the main suspect. But Jessie, who has returned to her home town from the big city after her divorce, is sure that gentle Willy is innocent. As she investigates, despite the disapproval of the local sheriff, who was her high school crush, she begins to find that her family and friends are somehow involved in a huge political scam--that may be very dangeerous to Jessie's own health and well-being.
"Okay" is the best word to describe this book. The story is your average murder/mystery with a romantic interest teaser thrown in to make the formula complete. It is easy to get through with nothing more captivating than the identity of the killer.
