I first bought and read this book back in 2000 and it feels a lifetime ago. The world has changed so much since then, but the fundamental principles of financial common sense remain the same.
Yes, specifics have changed in some areas post banking crisis, and the regulatory framework in the U.K. is much tighter now, but never is it more necessary to ensure that people understand the fundamentals of building financial security. Jobs are far less secure and property is out of the reach of many, but we all still need to understand what we spend today and how this will impact our tomorrows.
I read this as more of a reminder on how to control my impulses to spend, because this does need to be reviewed occasionally. I no longer work, but am not yet officially retired and I need to look at money in a different way from my previous years.
I recommend this book with the one proviso that be aware that some details are out of date. I feel it would be worthwhile for Alvin Hall to consider updating this book as we head towards the 20th anniversary of its publishing. There is always the need for sound, practical, financial advice.

It is very straight-forward, very accessible and at times, very interestingly personal, as Alvin offers some very applicable testimonies of money woes and and triumphs, including that of himself. Despite containing a few outdated references, the principals are timeless and explained very clearly for the uninitiated. This is the first finance management book I ever read as a fourth year university student, and it was very eye-opening in many places. Would recommend!

Another great thing to come out of Florida... Alvin Hall. OK so I will hoe that field one row at a time. A great book about taking responsibility and making our own successes.

I didn't really learn much from this but I suppose that is more of a comment on me and my great age than on the book, which seemed to offer sound advice as you would expect from Alvin Hall
