From the front cover to the last page, children will delight in the almost childlike and always colorful and quirky illustrations that accompany Maya & Filippo Play Chef at Sea, by Alinka Rutkowska. This tale is another in the series of Maya & Filippo, stories that tells of siblings who live on a beautiful cruise ship with their parents and their cat, Otello. On board, Maya and Filippo travel the world, discovering new places and “how things work.”
In Maya & Filippo Play Chef at Sea, Maya and Filippo, while crossing the Tasman Sea, decide to join the ship’s chef and a group of other children to make cakes. The fun begins as they crack eggs, pour milk, sift flour, and add their own special ingredients. The point of the exercise, Maya points out to another of the traveling children, is to have fun and to try something new. Along the way, Maya and Filippo learn that when they cooperate and communicate with one another, they may both accomplish all of what they desire, rather than only half.
The story of Maya and Filippo will excite the imagination of children who might wonder what it would be like to live at sea. Alinka Rutkowska, in Maya & Filippo Play Chef at Sea, takes children on just such a journey, providing them with some basic geographic information (about where lies the Tasman Sea), some good advice about working in a kitchen (wash your hands first!) and a valuable lesson about cooperation and communication.

Maya and Filippo live on a cruise ship called the "Fun Princess". They travel all over the world having fun discovering new things. In this story they are traveling from New Zealand to Tasmania. When their mom asks them what they'd like to do that day, Maya says she'd like to make a cake and Filippo says he wants to eat cake. They join a group of other children with the pastry chef. The chef had them wash their hands and put on an apron and hat like a real chef. He shows them the ingredients on the table and tells the what to do. Maya sees one boy looking sad and not participating. He only sees a mess, not cake. Maya convinces him that if he doesn't try he'll never know what he can do. They bake their cakes and then the parents get to taste them. The children learn how to have fun, take chances on something new and cooperate with each other.

This was a very cute book about the beauty, wonder, and inquisitive nature that children possess. Maya and Filippo are darling children, though Maya seems to be the more level-headed of the two. Filippo simply wants to eat the cake, but Maya knows that making a cake takes a lot of work. Since I read this on my Kindle, I was unable to color the pictures, but I'm sure that children would enjoy coloring the physical copy of the book.

This is a great little book that teaches children manners, politeness and a little bit of cooking. Having worked with little ones of this age I know the book has good repetition to enable the kids to learn as they read and strengthen their vocabularies. The idea of them also being able to color the pictures is wonderful. The only thing I would change is making the illustrations just a bit easier for little hands to color, maybe larger and more rounded.

I just am not sure how I feel about this book. The language is funny and makes me suspect the author is not a native English speaker. I searched the author only to find there is no real information about her. Every thing is about her decision to travel and write but nothing about where she originated. The language on her blog only seconds my suspicion that she is not a native English speaker. Had she mentioned that, I think I would have enjoyed the book more.
The great thing about this book is that the drawings are simple and open inviting the reader to color. I am big on coloring.
However, the story was a bit odd as if the author is not really familiar with child behavior. The characters, Maya and Filippo live on a ship and this particular day they are joining other children in the kitchen to make cakes. They are left to make whatever they like. One boy is not sure he wants to make a cake. With one sentence, Maya is able to convince the boy to make a cake and then at the end he doesn't like it. The other weird part had to do with Maya and Filippo fighting over an orange. It just didn't work for me.
This is the second book in the series but to be honest - I wouldn't pay $10 for either. I think there is a good idea here but the author needs to work on the story more than the concept.

My niece and I loved the first book by talented author, Alinka Rutkowska and we love this fun book just as much--both are amazing and educational, teaching the young audience some wonderful lessons.
Maya and Filippo, their parents and pet cat, Otello all live on a cruise ship, "Fun Princess" and they are having the time of their life exploring new places! As they cross the Tasman Sea, hitting wave after wave, Mom goes to the nice cabin with the large window to get the children out of bed and she asks, "What would you like to do today?"
"I'd like to make a cake," Maya replies.
"I'd like to eat a cake," Filippo answers.
Maya and Filippo walked with their mom to the Pastry's Bakery where they joined other children on the ship, along with an adorable, chubby pastry chef. The children just couldn't wait to get started baking! NOW it's time to get your copy of this wonderful book and find out what happens in the kitchen. Gorgeous illustrations and great lessons about communicating and sharing!
You will find many great lessons as you adventure along in this series! Highly recommended.

Hey, it’s another Maya & Filippo adventure! We first see our intrepid brother and sister team in Maya & Filippo Make Friends in Auckland. And now they’re back to… well, play chef at sea.
Again, as with the first one, a physical copy of this books would be better. Very simple and cute illustrations are perfect for coloring. I can even see this as a role playing activity — splitting the children into pairs and have them act out as Maya & Filippo.
It has good lessons about sharing, trying new things, and most of all, having fun.
But what was that ending? It ended too abruptly for me and I was left confused.
Rating: 3/5.
Recommendation: A great addition to kid’s libraries and daycare centers.

My 4 year old was very excited to have a win from Goodreads that was specifically for him.
This book was just the right length. Long enough to keep him engaged, but not so long that he would get bored. The simple and
colourful illustrations really caught his attention as well. We will definitely seek out more titles from this series.

Its a cute children's book with a couple of good messages in it. One you have to try things before you know what you like. Also if you communicate well things can turn out better. I was given this ebook to review in exchange of honest review.

I read this to my 4 year old grand-daughter and she picked up on the lessons the children learned immediately.
