My 1979 edition is a little dated now, but that matters little since most of the interesting stuff is historical anyway. Each architect of note has a paragraph or two detailing their major works which is very useful. There are also descriptions of various architectural features, vaults, domes etc. which are also illuminating. This is a useful book to carry about, since architecture of buildings is in a sense an open air art gallery and it is useful to be able to identify the salient features.

This is more of a reference book, so I didn't read it cover to cover, but it is interesting to scan.
