From Andre Michaux, John Muir, and other early explorers, to General John T. Wilder and the developers, from the Roan’s inexplicable “balds†to the lush forests of its “Canadian zone,†here is the story of one of the best-loved places in the Southern Appalachians. This new edition contains over 30 historical photographs not previously published. New chapters added to the book tell of intriguing new biological discoveries, notable historical visitors, and the findings of the author’s research conducted since the first edition was published in 1991.
I have read this a couple of times - usually after I go hiking on Roan Mountain -- to remind myself of everything on the mountain. Roan Mtn is one of my favorite places so I enjoyed the in-depth info. I am not sure how much you would enjoy it if you have never been there.
Excellent wealth of information on the geology, biology, industrialization, development, and subsequent preservation of Roan Mountain and the surrounding area. As someone who holds Roan Mountain to be sacred, I highly recommend this book to those who want to learn more about its history and biology.
