Colin West has been writing and illustrating books for children as long as he can remember. He works in the attic studio of his house in Epping, England, which he shares with his wife, Cathie.
This is a jungle tale introducing various animals trying to get a message to the toucan to tell everybody about Jumbo the elephant’s birthday jamboree. While they search for the toucan they spread the message themselves.
A simple scenario is established and the lively repetitive text builds up to the twist at the end. This book has a great rhythm which would engage younger readers when read aloud. The book has large colourful illustrations which will help the children to follow along. Teaching & learning Age range: This picture book would be suitable for KS1 ages 5-7. It is a simple book however does introduce animals that younger children may not be familiar with. The pictures can help show the children what the animals look like.
Central themes: This is a fun light hearted book with the main theme jungle animals. The children can also focus on the idea of teamwork and passing a message on.
How would you introduce the book? I would introduce the book by asking the children if they knew what a Toucan was. The illustration on the front would mean that the children would be able to see what the bird looked like. The children could discuss what their favourite animals are and why.
