Connor and her team of authors have done an exceptional job providing insight and information for anyone working with volunteers. Her handbook is a perfect blend of research and theory with practice and implication. I have pulled the book from my shelves to use in my guidance of other volunteer managers, to help with situations I encounter and to share with others looking for best practices in the field. This is a must-have for anyone who works with volunteers
This handbook ranks near, if not at the bottom of management or volunteer books. For a new edition it is clearly written as biased against younger volunteers. (read: Millenials) I honestly couldn't take the book very seriously after that. I might give the later chapters another chance but some of them aren't really applicable to a smaller organization without multiple paid staff positions. Some of the form examples might prove useful, along with the volunteer evaluation suggestions. For the sake of your wide-range of volunteers just skip the part about the generational differences. Please read the volunteer section of Non-Profit Management 101 instead. While an older book it has much better insights into the behavior and STRENGTHS of each generation instead of just inserting the stereotypical insults about younger generations as selfish and only good for tech how to do. (Disclosure: I'm right at the border between Gen X and Millenial)
