The Special Theory of Relativity by David Bohm

Rate this book
In these inspiring lectures David Bohm explores Albert Einstein's celebrated Theory of Relativity that transformed forever the way we think about time and space. Yet for Bohm the implications of the theory were far more revolutionary both in scope and impact even than this. Stepping back from dense theoretical and scientific detail in this eye-opening work, Bohm describes how the notion of relativity strikes at the heart of our very conception of the universe, regardless of whether we are physicists or philosophers.

Very good book on special relativity, with sufficient mathematics to explain the theory and at the same time includes certain ideas of his own (presumably) as to how to make sense of the theory in comparison to the heavily rooted Newtonian Theory. Recommended to anyone interested in the mathematics as well as the logic behind the theory.

This book is based on theoretical physics lectures given by David Bohm at Birkbeck College of University of London. His view of the theory reflects his opinions on Popper's falsification theories and his views on physics and perception. The various topics are treated in some depth, but disappointingly, when a bit more depth is required, author concludes that it would be too detailed to get to the bottom of the issue and presents the final result. Personally, I have not gained much studying this book, although some others may certainly disagree. Two stars only from me.

I found this book from a cross-reference in Peter Senge's book, The Fifth Discipline, quite the happy accident if I might say so myself. As someone with a background in information architecture and engineering, this is one of the few books that takes the time to explore the implications of modern science — to the point of even questioning the role of science itself.

I purchased this book for a very specific purpose, which was to gain access to the 42 page Appendix entitled "Physics & Perception". Through this Appendix, Bohm takes the time to carefully explore the role of science, directly questioning the conventional perspective that the aim of science is to uncover the "truth" about a world that is "out there" and inherently separate from our perceptions.

To replace this notion, Bohm posits that the true role of science is to expand our perception, gaining insights as both our perceptions and the domain of our explorations expand outward together. I found this work refreshingly honest, particularly due to the historical approach he takes towards science to explain how science "actually works".

As a side note, I probably would have given this book 5 stars instead of 4 if I was more familiar with some of the mathematics involved. However, with that said, Bohm writes from the perspective of a true teacher — seeking to help others understand and explore, rather than simply indoctrinate his readers with his own perspectives.

Best introduction to special relativity I've read. Including an appendix on the philosophy of perception and its implications to science.

Wow. It's been a long time since I really thought through this stuff. David Bohm is a uniquely original big picture thinker, and also an amazingly thoughtful and clear communicator. Worth reading if you're interested in this stuff and have the background to follow along.

absolutely brilliant. from explaining easily what the relativity theory is, to an insight into the common methods and ways humans have become accustomed to perceiving time & space as absolute, which makes it difficult to accept the theory

great read for any physics, philosophy or common science enthusiast

Good book. A serious attempt to get under the skin of relativity theory and explain why it makes sense and why it's so hard for most of us to fit into our heads.
