Margaret McNamara is the Christopher Award–winning author of more than two dozen books for young readers, including the Robin Hill School series. The Fairy Bell Sisters series is inspired not only by her love of the classic sisterhood novel Little Women but by her own experiences growing up with older sisters (and a baby brother). Margaret and her family live in New York City, but they spend part of their summer on an island in Maine very much like Sheepskerry Island.
I have to be honest--I don't love Eloise. She's a spoiled brat without any endearing, redeeming qualities. The girls don't seem to care for her, either.
This book had an easy reading level. In this story, Eloise took the reader through what one of her tutoring lessons was like. She explained that she likes to tease her tutor to make the session more fun. The tutor, Philip, gets annoyed with Eloise because all he wants to do is teach her how to do math. Eloise makes Philip’s job harder because she will not follow directions.
This story did not have a clear theme. I think this is because it is for readers who are just beginning to learn how to read.
Rating: 3/5 While the book is super cute, it does not have a clear theme.
I personally relate to this book because I remember when I was first learning to read, Eloise books were some of the first books I could read on my own.
I would recommend this book to children who have just learned how to read on their own or to parents who are teaching their kids how to read. It is a simple and cute story that is easy to follow.
Clever. Witty. But it's an easier read- like for first grade, and the witty remarks that I thought made it funny and cute, went right over the boy's head that was reading it to me. Although the lead is a girl she doesn't do anything a boy wouldn't do too, so it's not necessarily a girl book- just a child trying to get out of having a math lesson.
Eloise does not like math. In this book she does everything she can think of to get out of her math lesson for the day. In the end, 5+6=11, which is what time the math lesson is over, so she accomplished something. Ages 4-6.
