Keeping Kaitlyn

Rate this book
First book in the Mates of the Lycaon series.

Kaitlyn leads a regular life in a normal town, until one day the force of an unknown connection pulls her into an alternate reality. On the flip side of the veil Kaitlyn finds herself in the hands of two powerful dire wolf shifters, Rafian and Lucas, who tell her she is their mate.

Lucas has lost everything to the Magica Hunters who want the Lycaon shifters driven from their world. He passionately craves Kaitlyn and must employ every ounce of his formidable control once she’s near enough to touch. Her presence soothes the pain of his past.

Rafian has experienced loss too, though his comes with a dark guilt that haunts him. His brand of loving involves rope and handcuffs, acts he knows Kaitlyn may not be ready for, but he has waited years for her and it’s difficult to master his desires.

Together, he and Lucas tempt Kaitlyn’s body with every erotic move they have to make, while they stealthily seduce her heart. They make her see them for who they truly are—her perfect matches in every way.

Lucas and Rafian awaken emotion and passion in Kaitlyn that she’s never known, but the weight pulling at her from the other side of the veil is formidable. Will she be able to stay with the men she loves?

Anya Bast is the author of numerous works of romantic fiction, mostly all paranormal and mostly all scorching hot. She lives in the country with her husband, daughter, eight cats, a dog, and an odd assortment of rescued animals.

She grew up in Minnesota and still favors the colder climates. After high school she moved to the southeast United States where she attended college. While in graduate school she sold her first book and decide to pursue her lifelong dream of writing instead of a career in psychology.

Somewhat reclusive by nature, she can be drawn out with a good bottle of red wine, classic movies, or good music. When she’s not writing, she can be found trying to grow organic vegetables, shopping in thrift stores for that perfect piece of clothing, or dreaming about travel to some faraway country.

She’s hard at work on a brand new series for Berkley Sensation right now, while winding up her national bestselling Elemental Witches quartet.

Keeping Kaitlyn is a sweet and excitingly erotic novella set across twin worlds; our own and another filled with a history of battles between Magica and Shapeshifters. Originally one, the worlds were split apart by a mysterious force trying to prevent the destruction of humanity after the shapeshifting Lycaons rebelled against their Magica masters. I found this premise of a world that was once part of ours, but separated through magic really interesting, and I would love to see the history of that explored more in future books.

When the split occurred, most of the Lycaon went with the Magica to the new world, while a few remained behind. Lycaon souls long to be with each other, and not even the Veil is enough to stop the mating bond from calling them.

Being a novella, Anya needed to cover a lot of ground introducing the story and characters quickly. She did that with remarkable skill, so that by chapter two I already knew the main protagonist, Kaitlyn, well enough to like her and empathise with her. Kaitlyn is from our world, and unknowingly part Lycaon. I loved that her feisty manner was combined with a caring and practical nature, even when she finds herself in an overwhelming situation.

The characters of Lucas and Rafian were also well realised by Anya Bast. She presents the story from the viewpoint of all three characters and this allows the reader to get a good understanding of them in a short space of time. The two male wolf shifters know Kaitlyn as their mate, they just have to convince her of the truth. Anya gives Lucas and Rafian both funny and serious moments, but each also had a distinctly different personality which I thought was very well done. I loved their amusing reactions when Kaitlyn would do something that proved she wasn’t an incapable female. Did I mention that they were hot? They were, very!

Although presenting the story from different viewpoints helped with understanding the characters, I did find it a bit confusing a couple of times. I found myself checking back to see which of the male characters perspective was currently being presented. Other than that though, I can’t find anything in Keeping Kaitlyn that was disappointing, I just wish it could have been longer!

The believable characters and interesting setting are supported by some very erotic and explicit love scenes. Since there are so few Lycaon females, each of them always has two male mates and this allowed Anya a lot of flexibility. The resulting love scenes were excitingly hot, very well written and even took into account the practicalities of their situation. All I can say is Kaitlyn is a very lucky girl!

When it came to Kaitlyn’s choice near the end, I got quite choked up. I was totally invested in Kaitlyn’s character and Anya’s writing allowed me to experience her emotion and anguish first hand. I won’t spoil the context of that choice, and so can’t say much more.

Keeping Kaitlyn combines well realised characters with an engaging story and some super erotic sex. Highly recommended!

Keeping Kaitlyn is sooo good

Kaitlyn has waking dreams about two hot men Lucas and Rafian. They draw her into their world because she is their mate. The journey for Kaitlyn as she learns to love them and accept that she can not go back to her life and keep her mates is an emotional rollercoaster. This book is a fast burn, with 3 hot men wanting to please their girl. You will get all the feels.

The author said this series is more erotic than her previous ones, so I wonder how mild those previous books were.

Anyways, apart from the constant love-making, I think the plot of the book is promising, and I heard it gets better with the next two books, so we'll see.

And I hope to see more adventurous erotic chapters in the next book.

I thought that KEEPING KAITLYN was a very average Paranormal-Erotica read with slight hints of Fantasy and BDSM. It was a short novella that included your usual self-sacrificial, super hot, super caring and romantic lycans, and gorgeous, thoughtful human heroine. It's not bad, just not that original.

Kaitlyn is a computer engineer drowning herself in her work in hopes that busying herself would allow her to forget her failed marriage. She's coping just fine, but now, she's getting weird dreams of two very hot and sexy males and she thinks she's going crazy.

One night while she was still hard at work, she decided she couldn't focus on her work anymore with those dreams bugging her more than usual, she figured she should just go home or visit her sister who lived nearby. She steps into the station and waits for her train when all of a sudden, she feels all woozy and blacks out for a few seconds, and wakes up in the arms of one of the men in her dreams. Well, she didn't take self-defense classes after her violent divorce for nuthin'. She takes out her pepper spray and fries his eyes. Oooh, that's gotta hurt, especially when this is the first time Lucas ever heard of pepper sprays.

Anyway, Lucas tells her that she's been pulled across the veil into an alternate reality where people could shapeshift, into wolves, bears and even birds, by the mating bond that ties her to him and Rafian, her other mate, who happens to be that other guy from her dreams, and that she couldn't return to the mortal realm until two weeks are up. Lucas and Rafian do love her a lot, and are willing to do anything to convince her to stay and go through the mating ritual (it's really just a wedding but saying vows that are infused with magick), but Kaitlyn can't bear the thought of losing her sisters and letting them think that her disappearance means that she's met with any tragic mishaps.

But in that two short weeks that Kaitlyn was stuck in the house Lucas and Rafian built for her in the secluded woods covered with a fine layer of snow that seemed like a fairytale, Lucas and Rafian seduced her mind, body and soul, and made her believe that soul mates do exist. So now that she's reached a deadlock, will the two lycaons' seduction efforts be enough to make her choose to stay with them, or is her loyalty to her sister the more omnipresent force?

It's always the heroine having to choose between love and something else, usually either destiny or for duty. Which would almost always end up being tied with love. Convenient, but that's how HEAs (happily ever after) works, right? But that's where KEEPING KAITLYN is slightly different. Kaitlyn did get a happy ending, but she didn't get to keep the other option. She did have to pick an option in the end, but the other one got its own resolution too, so it was technically still a HEA. It's just not the way I expected. So there was a surprise element in here too. Lol, and that's where the .5 of my rating came from. I did like it, but didn't love it. Lukewarm feelings doesn't really call for a long review, so I'll stop here.

Just one little thing. The "light BDSM" that the synopsis talked about was really light, but the only part of BDSM that Bast kept and used was the part that I thought was weird and disliked the most. Lol, but well, readers may like it so...:/

KEEPING KAITLYN: Short, sweet Paranormal-Erotica with your usual touches of cliche. But ultimately an enjoyable read.

Saw a review on Sizzling Hot Book Reviews and was intrigued. Wasn't disappointed.:)

Who doesn't like to daydream to get an escape from reality? I know I do and so does Kaitlyn Gannet. But when her daydreams become real, Kaitlyn has to make the choice of the daydream or the real world. After being transported through time and space to the two men of her daydreams, she gives in and releases her inner passions. Soon the daydream world becomes all to real and Kaitlyn realizes that a choice has to be made.

The fantasy of having 2 lovers who want to cater to your every need is win/win situation. Kaitlyn thought it would be difficult to give in to her desires with two strangers, but once she realizes just how much these men want to pleasure her, The 2 males characters in this story are complete opposites and I couldn't wait to read more about them. Lucas has dark hair, tattoos, and an attitude. Total bad boy which I absolutely LOVE! Rafian is blonde, has an easy going disposition, and gives Kaitlyn the space and time that she needs to adjust to the new place. But don't let that easy going disposition fool you because Rafian loves it rough and likes to be in charge. I loved that his character was a complete 180 to what I thought he would be and that we got to see another side of him! His scenes with Kaitlyn were absolutely scorching and I loved that Anya Bast incorporated a little bondage into this storyline. It wasn't overbearing and seemed to be a natural element to the storyline. Lucas and Rafian genuinely cared for Kaitlyn due to the fact that she is their mate and could see how the choice to stay or return home could be difficult for her to make.

I really enjoyed escaping into Kaitlyn's daydream. The story was filled with many erotic moments as well as touching ones. The story also has a Paranormal element to it because Lucas and Rafian are shifters and turn into wolves. There are actually lots of other shifters in the storyline and it was interesting to read about all the different kinds. Kaitlyn is one lucky lady to have not just 1 but 2 men that care about her so deeply. I hope this story is the beginning of a new series by Anya Bast because I think a lot of lonely ladies could benefit with having their daydreams become a reality. ;)

3.75 out of 5. A novella that embraced an alternate universe, existing right along side ours, and one into which a "mating bond" can reach and draw a mate toward the Lycan males who are destined to be hers if she will but decide to remain in their world. By an author that has a fine reputation as a romance/paranormal writer, this story is not long nor is it complicated, but it is emotional as Kaitlyn must face the necessity of deciding to remain with two wolf shifters who desire her for a mate or returning to the earth-world where her two sisters--her very best friends--would be devastated at her disappearance. Ms Bast has fashioned an ending that was surprisingly satisfying, and even though it came upon the reader somewhat quickly, that is indeed the nature of novellas and didn't seem forced or contrived. It was a very enjoyable read and one that will provide some entertaining diversion in one's busy life.

Like this short story very much. It's my first read by this author but I'll definitely be checking out more of her work. So why not a little higher? I think I need a bit more emotion/angst--there was some much hintted at through out the story that I wished was explored more, but is was probably a constraint of page count. Thought she did a bang up job with the world building and the two heroes were yummy!

I downloaded this short story, hoping for a quick and easy read and I was happy when that's what I got.

This is the first book I've read by Bast and I'll definitely look into trying out more of her work.

It was unique, sweet and hot. I kinda wish it wasn't so short, that we'd got more interaction of Kaitlyn falling in love with Lucas and Rafian and that there'd been more of a plot, but it was still an enjoyable read that I liked.

More like 1.5 stars territory. What creep factor that Twilight (by the same author) lacked, Keeping Kaitlyn more than made up for. It's again a menage, and again there are two men and a woman, but this time the men aren't physically involved at all. They simply "love" each other. Not exactly my cup of tea (especially since they didn't act like it), but ehhh... what can you do, really?

Review to come. Also at Caps Lock Thinks.

A very different twist to the Shifter/Werewolf stories. There was two worlds, one of Magick & Shifters of all kinds, & ours. Kaitlyn is brought thru the Veil into the world of the Lycaons to be with her two mates. Fantasy & romance are the basis of storyline. I thought it was a good story. She left behind two sisters. Are there men from Lycaon waiting for them? We'll see in the next book.

Enjoy!!

It was okay. I didn't connect with the characters at all because there seemed to be a disconnect in themes that didn't flow well. Time travel + ménage + shapeshifters + BDSM. Bast had a bit too much going on in this story.

I didn't love it and I didn't hate it but I most likely will never read it again.

This is a short book. Most that I have read from Anya Bast are short. They are good adult books though. Lots of action, a good love story and really good sex scenes. For a really good quick read, I highly recommend this author! Adults only. I have also read Keeping Kaitlyn,Fury, and Tranquility. All are VERY good shifter, werewolves, magic, vampire type stories.

A nice shapeshifter ménage, I am still hoping there will be a little more world building as the series progresses. Heavy on sex and a little lighter on story unfortunately but still enough interest there to want to read more.

Not great literature

This could have been written by a teenager. It is simple and choppy. The story line was good but that's all the positive I can say about it.

Light read for me and I thought that magica hunters would pose more extreme play in the book.Well I guess it's good that the book was not depressing hahaha :D
