This wasn't the best book about Vietnam that I've ever read. It wasn't what I was expecting, but Vogel wasn't intending to write a "normal" war story, and he didn't. For what it was, he did a fine job. He was telling what he learned from his 13 months in Vietnam, how he grew up in Vietnam. About his personal operations, his platoon and his buddies. So you rarely get a view of the big picture of what's happening in Vietnam overall. Which is actually pretty accurate for the guys on the front lines in the lower ranks, but not very informative. It was an enjoyable read overall, but not the first one I would recommend if someone wanted to learn about the Vietnam War.
Felt like I was there. All adverse circumstances have some common threads. Guilt, shame, anger exhilaration, confusion, etc. One of the strongest is fear, when survival is uncertain and death surrounds on every side. This book describes them all, but best of all, it gives lessons out of the fire for us al. Well written.
This is one of the best books I have ever read.Thomas j Vogel is one of the most outstanding people I have ever known.Every bit of what he has written is true.I know I lived it too.He was one of the most important people in my life.Miss You!
Great example of a young man growing and becoming a Christian thru the jungles of Vietnam. excellent lessons displayed on the path that nearly cost his life on several occasions. good book
