Been way too long since I read this book...I only added it because I found it on my kindle and remembered I'd read it back in March or April. This one is about Bess, the Raven shifter who has learned it's better to keep superficial relationships, especially after her closest friend (and love?) went off and married an enemy Niyanoka. She comes into contact with Niyanoka Soul Whisperer, Cesar Garza, who is equally set on superficial relationships. They have a bit of push/pull relationship while they're tracking down and dealing with Nagi's new offspring creatures.

I really like this series. And this story was an equally strong addition as the rest of them, though the first in this series is still the best for my tastes. Bess and Cesar are both pretty cynical and their switch over to love feels kind of fast considering. I love the supernatural aspect of this story, especially the debate over whether Nagi's offspring are dangerous or not...and this creates a point of contention between the two characters. I'm still not really sure myself. I'm pretty upset about what we learned about Tuff and how there was no closure to that and no chance for his own story. Good story - very enjoyable.

Bess and Cesar were born to be enemies. Half-blood descendants of two ancient and powerful spirits, their two races have been at odds since a war left both sides filled with hatred and distrust. When they both find themselves at the scene of a grisly death in the forest and the possible discovery of a new race, they find themselves stragely drawn to each other. Agreeing to work together to find more information on the strange death, they struggle to keep the sexual tension building between them from coming out.

The story was captivating. The perfect mix of suspence, paranormal, and romance. As Bess and Cesar discover more about each other's past, as well as their present, the feeling between them don't go away as they hoped - but only grow stronger. Their romance is far from perfect. They both have secrets in the past, and the fued between their two races stands in their way on every step they take and on every page of the book.

The Lakota legends and spirits that are a part of the story were great to read about. I never knew how rich the stories were until now. The ancient spirits are introduced in a way that made them familiar and easy to relate to as well. Their personalities were quite entertaining in their own way.

The ending summed up so many things very nicely, but left enough open for potentially a sequel (although I haven't seen anything about one being released, but I hope they do). If not, I have just enough to imagine what they might do next.

*Soul Tracker: A Niyanoka of the Spirit Clan with the power to bear witness to a death by touching the corpse. The Soul Trackers sees exactly what the departed saw in the moments prior to his death and also experiences his thoughts. This makes Soul Trackers essential for solving crimes such as murder, but also makes them unclean in the minds of their kind, making them outcasts. None will touch them for they are believed to be unclean. * Terminology of Soul Tracker from the back of the book.
I love these stories. I am not sure were they come from but it sounds more Native American. I have not heard many from them but I would like to read more. The Native American stories make so much sense they sometimes make my heart hurt. I love the stories and I hope their will be more. I received a complimentary review copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving a honest review.

A dead woman brings together Bess, a raven Skinwalker, and Caesar, a Spirit Child. They are enemies, yet they need to work together to discover who, or what, is leaving behind these gruesome murders. Along the way, can they reconcile their attraction? Their feelings don't matter because their relationship is forbidden.

Will they let prejudice and lies keep them apart?

There was plenty of mystery in this story. Nagi, the evil Spirit who has been the enemy from the beginning of the series, has been very busy. We also are given the impression that Caesar's people have been suppressing the truth and are are generally unwilling to help or accept the truth. I was engaged in this story from the beginning. The ending was satisfying, if a little surprising! Overall, a worthwhile read.

In Kernan's paranormal romance novel, Bess Suncatcher is haunted by her father's death. Seeking healing, the shape-shifter journeys deep into Northern California, but her peace is threatened when she discovers a dead human and meets a handsome stranger. Cesar Garza is a Soul Whisperer and fated to use his gifts to track demonic predators. This case is too much for him to crack alone and is forced to admit that he needs Bess's help. An attraction flares between them, Cesar tries to fight it and concentrate on the case. For them, an alliance is forbidden and potentially dangerous. A great installment to The Trackers series.

The glossary of terms in the back of the book helped me to understand the supernaturnal plot (loosely based on Lakota myth) of this romance novel. After that, the plot boils down to 2 "halflings" (Beth & Cesar) from differing clans (Inanoka/Skinwalkers & Niyanoka) with a mutual attraction who meet while discovering new halfing entities. I found that the story seemed to dwell on things in the past without much forward movement which left it with a flat feeling. [Thanks for extra book Jenna!]

This was an interesting story. Quick to read and basically perfect for mindless enjoyment. I enjoyed the made-up Lakota legends and myths too. Inventive.

I enjoyed seeing Raven come to the realisation that she was being a bigot. I enjoyed seeing the realisation dawn that they were soul-mates too. Mostly though I just enjoyed the descriptions of the Red Road and the entire spiritual mythology.

The raven/woman in this book is fascinating to me. I marvel at Ms. Kernan's ability to twist my mind around the paths of the skin-walker's minds. The seemingly overwhelming reasons for the hero and heroine to not fall in love is well-crafted and finally broken open to reveal all the good reasons these two belong together.

This series just gets better and better. I read this in one sitting, and it's not exactly what I would call a short. The characters, story line, and intrigue are incredible well-written. I can't recommend this one highly enough.
