Will You Still Love Me?

Rate this book
Said the bunny to his mother, just as sweetly as could be, "When the baby bunnies come, will you still love me?" "Of course," said Mother Bunny. "You're my extra-special one. And I'll love you just as much when the baby bunnies come." Every child is anxious about the arrival of a new brother or sister. In Carol Roth's sweet, comforting story, various animal mothers-and one human one-reassure their little ones that love has no limits, and they will be loved as much as before. Daniel Howarth's soft watercolors tenderly depict the mother-child bond.

I liked this book because it talks about what it will be like for older siblings who are having a new baby brother or sister. I connected with this because I have younger siblings and every time I got another, I wondered how much my parents would love me after. It turns out they could love us all, just like the characters' parents in this book.

It's very human to want reassurance from Mommy that you, the young kid, will still be loved.

Every time I encounter one of these books, I see the need.

In all candor, what else happens every time? I wonder how these super-mushy books can be read out loud with a straight face.

FOR EXAMPLE, HERE'S A TYPICAL SENTIMENT

Mother Mouse is shown hugging her baby mouse in a vise-like grip. Both have their eyes closed, evidently because they are communing so deeply.

"Of course," said Mother Mouse.
"You're my love, you're my heart,
And the new baby mice
won't keep us apart."

Hey, Goodreaders could you predict that this so-reassuring book would, of course, be written in rhyming verse?

RATING THIS BOOK

When only a mushy-mushy book will do, turn to this one. Sure. FIVE STARS.

A sweet book about a mothers love. All kids need reassurance when having a new baby brother or sister. As I remember well from my kids when I was pregnant. This would be a great read for a mom who’s expecting to explain a mother’s love for her child.

Cute little book exploring if a mother’s love will still continue for her older child once a new baby arrives. The text is pretty repetitive (in a positive way) as a whole series of different animals ask their mother the same question.

This book just melts your heart. All of the different little animals are asking the mommy if she will still love them when the new baby is born. This is so adorable.

This book will help children understand that just because another brother/sister are joining the family, parents or caregivers still love you. It is hard at first for children to realize that the family is growing, and to accept that mom/dad or caregivers will have one more to love. I like how the author used animals, because children seem to relate to stories told with animals. This story rhymes which is easier to listen to, also uses the same line when asking mom will you still love me. Good story which says just enough to reassure child that no matter what parents/caregivers will always love you.

Learning Experience:
This book has many ways to extend, here are a few. One is to discuss about the life cycle of animals, another is to learn more about the animals mentioned in the book. I chose to extend this book with music, all children and adults love baby animals, and using music to sing about animals is one way to learn about different species of animals. Here is a song I found on the internet called "I Like Baby Animals"- Orignal author unknown- www.preschooleducation.com
Here are the lyrics.

I like baby animals,
Animals, animals.
I like baby animals,
I'll name some for you.

Kittens, puppies, chicks and foals,
Chicks and foals, chicks and foals.
Kittens, puppies, chicks and foals,
I can name some more.

Goslings, ducklings, lambs and calves,
Lambs and calves, lambs and calves.
Goslings, ducklings, lambs and calves,
I like baby animals.

Roth, Carol Will You Still Love Me?, 24 pages, Albert Whitman & Company; Language~G, Sexual Content~G; Violence~G

The news that a new baby will be arriving soon can bring up many questions in the mind of a child. Accompanied by adorable color illustrations, many different animal mothers are asked questions about what will happen when the new baby comes. Each child is then assured in loving words that they will still be loved when the new baby comes. The final child is a human child whose mother assures him that he too will be loved. . .”more than ever” when the baby comes. This is a sweet book that will charm any who pick it up.

Mother's love shines in this beautifully illustrated book of rhyming text. Young cats, rabbits, mice, ducks and polar bears all share one thing with the human child in this story - an insecurity about what the birth of the new baby will mean. "When the new baby comes, will you still love me?" The moms all describe special times and reassure their little one that they will love them even more when the new little ones come. Great read aloud demonstrating the depth of a mother's love and the joy she feels being with her little ones, and very reassuring for a young child about to become a big brother or sister.

As an adult, this book can be too repetitive. But it's good for the age it is going for and for the topic (preparing a child for when a new baby comes). I think little children will like going through the different animals. The illustrations are soothing as are the reassurances from the different mothers. Then the book "brings it home" with the human child asking his mother. (Nice self-promotion at the end, by the way.) A good one to add to the collection if anything for the topic that it addresses. Can never have enough of those, it seems!

So we were picking up a book at the library and my child randomly grabbed this from the shelf as we passed on our way to check out. I am so glad. It is beautifully illustrated with soft colorful pictures of different animals with their mothers (and one human one). It is also about a very good topic of a child's wonder if their mother will love them when a new child joins the family. The message that love only grows is timeless and conveyed to children in a rhythmic way. A book we look forward to owning.

This book is for families who are expecting their second child. Just about each page has a different animal asking his mother that when the new baby comes, will she still love him. Very repetative, but in this case I believe that it is approriate. Usually when new babies arrive those that are already there do have concerns about what is going to happen and this is a great way to let them know that Mom and Dad will always love you.

The story shows examples of children asking their mothers whether they will still love them when the new babies arrive. A very cute and relative story while the children and their mothers go about their tasks. The storytime audience was observant and discussed the various illustrations. Good story.

Lovely rhyming story to share with little ones expecting a new sibling. The rhymes are a little Hallmark-greeting-card-ish, but the sentiments and illustrations make up for it.

This is a lovely, straight-forward story to answer kids' questions about their place in Mom's heart after the new baby comes. A good addition to elementary school libraries.
