Originally titled "From Goo to You by way of the Zoo", I found this book in the gift shop of a roadside coffee shop, probably a Stuckey's, on a cross-country road trip in the summer of 1972. It is fitting that the author of this religious pamphlet masquerading as a children's guide to evolution is a "reformed" con artist named Harold Hill. Much like that notorious, scheming traveling salesman, Hill intends to spin you a morality tale and sell you a bill of goods.
Hill tells a tale of a single blob in the ocean that goes through a series of changes for no particular reason. This sequence of unexplained, nee inexplicable metamorphoses, to one single individual organism, mind you, lead eventually to it becoming a human being. This simplistic, deceptive tale has nothing to do with our understanding of biology, but does manage to be ridiculous, which I'm sure was Hill's intent. After wasting your time and taking advantage of your curiosity about science, he finishes by admonishing you that your only hope is to become a Christian and receive the Holy Spirit. Whether he was simply ignorant of science or deliberately lying, he probably helped to deceive a few young minds with this junk.
"… the idea of creation is inconceivable without God." from the forward by Werner von Braun
This was a compelling read written by a mostly-reformed con-artist Harold Hill who learned how much God loved him. This discovery made all the difference in the world to him. Following the publication of his "Manufacturer's Handbook - the Bible" - he overcome many problems in his life, including smoking, gambling, and alcoholism, and he began to live his life over as his "King's Kid" book was published. He became a noted speaker, humorist, writer, and teacher of Christian living truths. His book,"King's Kid" is now on my list of must reads.
