This is an introductory guide to the relationship between politics, strategy and war. This is an introductory guide to strategy in the modern world. Military strategy can be understood as the process by which armed force is converted into intended political effects. As such, it constitutes one of the most important activities of the past two centuries. Nevertheless, strategy is an activity that remains little understood, and one that has rarely realized the hopes that have so frequently been invested in it. This book seeks to explain why this is the case through an engagement with strategic theory in the context of its historical and contemporary practice. Stone begins with three basic questions: What is strategy? How does strategy work? Why is strategy so difficult? He then goes on to argue that to be truly effective strategy must faithfully reflect the political context in which it is formulated. Using case studies from the eighteenth century to the present day, Stone presents a theoretical framework around which historical and contemporary events can be explored and studied.

An excellent read by "senior lecturer" John Stone! I fondly recall my office hours visits with Dr. Stone during my time at King's! I wait with anticipation for a follow up book!

قرأت النسخة العربية (الاستراتيجية العسكرية) الكتاب عظيم.
وبمشي بخط زمني ببدا من الحرب العالمية الاولى لغاية حرب امريكا ع العراق وافغانستان. بناقش كل حرب صارت في هاي الفترة هل كان مجدي فعلا استعمال القوة العسكرية لتحقيق الاهداف السياسية التي تم تبنيها؟ وهل كان من الحكمة (حسن التدبير) استخدام هذه القوات بهذا القدر لتحقيق الهدف المعين؟ ام ان المبالغة في استخدام القوة قد ادت الى اثار عكسية بالمقابل؟!

رغم نهاية الكتاب المتفائلة عن نتائج الحربين (العراق/افغانستان) الي انتهوا بعد طباعة الكتاب واتضح خطا توقع الكاتب عنهم انهم رح يحققوا مكاسب بتكاليف معقولة في رصيد امريكا لمحاربة الارهاب. الا انهم انتهوا بانسحاب سلبي من طرف القوات الامريكية بعد تكاليف كبيرة تعرضلها الجيش بسبب حركات المقاومة في البلدين.

بالتاكيد ما بقدر احصر ال180 صفحة بهاي الكلمات، الحرب على الارهاب اخدت اخر 20 صفحة منه فقط. لكن الكتاب قيم جدا ويتضح فيه انحيازه وتبريره لسياسات وقرارات الاداة العسكرية الامريكية لكنه في كثير من الاراء كان موضوعي جدا في حكمه على الاحداث خلال الفترة الزمنية الطويلة الي غطاها.

خمس نجوم اكيد ويوصى بقراءته خاصة #لغير اصحاب الاختصاص# كمقدمة في مجال الاستراتيجيات العسكرية.
