An illegal homeless camp, an unscrupulous criminal element, and a furious neighborhood— a recipe for tragedy.
Camp Faith squats in the path of the new freeway. The sprawling, makeshift encampment is unsightly and unsanitary, but its occupants have nowhere else to go. These are society’s castoffs, made up of the homeless, the addicted, and the mentally unstable.
Outreach groups are eager to help, but the local community wants the interlopers removed. Anger runs high on both sides of the issue, and the political pressure for a resolution is enormous. The sheriff and the governor join the partisan fray as the camp becomes a pawn in a larger game.
Now, a rash of nearby burglaries threatens to turn up the heat to unseen levels. Detectives with the Spokane Police Department must quickly find the culprits before tempers boil over.
When a prominent local business owner is murdered, can the cops keep a lid on everything? Or will the neighborhood explode in chaos?

The Path of Progress by Colin Conway A 509 Crime Story
Police procedural set in the 509 area code – Spokane specifically – that was well crafted and fit together piece by piece reminding me of some tricky puzzles I worked on recently.
What I liked: * Leya Navarro: Property Crimes detective for six months, happily married with two little girls, dedicated, intelligent, doesn’t really want a male partner to “help” find the burglar(s) * Damien Truscott: detective that was in SVU for two years and moved back to Property Crimes, much gossip about why he moved, happily married with teenage sons, movie buff, a nice balance to Leya * Andrew Parker: homicide detective, happily married, father of three little girls, body builder, enjoys being a detective but not the hours away from his family * The police procedural aspect of the story that started with burglaries, moved to the homeless as targets for crime in the area, then on to a murder, and the way all of the pieces found by the detectives came together to solve more than one case on the books * The glimpse at politics in the workplace and beyond to city and state * The way family was important to the main characters as were their personal beliefs and back stories – we are all products of what has come before in our lives * That I felt invested in the story and the characters and wanted to see how it would end * That there were no real loose ends EXCEPT wondering why Damien Truscott chose to leave the SVU and go back to Property Crimes…maybe that will come out in a future book in the series along with whether or not Andrew Parker will find a way to move on to something he might enjoy more
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like * Thinking about the homeless and if there is a solution that might work… * Having to leave the various characters and not knowing what their futures hold in store for them

Thank you to the author for the ARC – this is my honest review.
The 509 Crime Stories is unique from most series. Each book pulls back the shade and shines the light on a specific group of law enforcement, criminals, and some who are living through difficult situations. I have enjoyed each book by author Colin Conway because of the completeness of each story. The stories and characters are well-defined, making it easy to follow. Because the reader (me) is not bombarded with multiple events that will not be resolved. I can enjoy each character because I know they are important to this story. As advertised, you can read any of the books in any order and like a good meal, be satisfied when you finish. -Mr.Bill
The detectives have their hands full with this one. Not to mention the "back again" detective that the "powers that be" think is needed. The chemistry between them actually evolved into a good working relationship, and I hope to see them paired together again in the future 509's. Their hands are kept busy, juggling a homeless camp, protesters, robberies ... and a murder! Check out this latest installment of The 509, you'll have trouble putting it down.
I received this novel as an ARC read for a honest review. The politicians are on the warpath with the police to get the homeless under control because they believe they are the ones committing the high crime wave where the are pitching their tents. Leya and Truscott the detectives are that a assigned the job. Well written, great storyline, and twists to keep you on your toes. Colin Conway knows how to entertain you, always a good solid read.
I have read the books in this series and have enjoyed them. This latest is well-written, compelling, and has a few twists to keep you reading and guessing what really happened. I would highly recommend this book. Releases. Feb 3
Congratulations Colin on yet an brilliant book which I Absolutely enjoyed reading it and lastly thank you for my ARC copy of this brilliant book. I would definitely recommend to other avid readers like me 😊📖
A fascinating read that is certainly not the basic run of the mill police procedural. A thoroughly engrossing page turner! The storyline grabs from page one with multidimensional portrayals of the police who aspire to catching the bad guys whilst navigating personal rivalries.
