The sexy biker, Reefer, gave Sarah an hour's worth of sex in a kiss that lasted no more than ten seconds. He knocked her world off kilter; but little did he know, he'd set directly on target for his heart.
Sarah always dreamed of joining a motorcycle gang and hitting the open road. What better way to escape a troubled childhood filled with poverty and alcoholism than to ride out and live a gypsy lifestyle? Her life changed the morning a biker stopped in the middle of the road and asked if she wanted a ride.
Reefer had two don’t mess around with women who didn’t grow up riding the road, and his biker family always came first. Nothing prepared him for the woman who hopped onto the back of his Harley with the ease of a born rider and peeled back the layers of his sealed heart.
Two people running from a world full of hurt. Can they escape to find happiness or will they have to first revisit the past?
Debra Kayn is published by Grand Central Publishing, Simon & Schuster Publishing, Carina Press - Harlequin Enterprises Limited, and is also a hybrid author who publishes independently. She's repped by FinePrint Literary Management and is a member of RWA. A multi-bestseller, she always has another book coming soon.
Believing everyone deserves to love and be loved, she takes the most unlikely characters and turns them into heroes and heroines.
She lives with her family in the Bitterroot Mountains of beautiful North Idaho, where she enjoys the outdoors, the four seasons, and the wild animals that gather in her yard.
The Chromes & Wheel Gang, the biker "family" featured in the novels in this series, is an unusual group of people who are committed to life on the road, but in every sense of the word, they are family. The leaders of the group, Knuckles and Sunflower Butter, are surrogate parents to Reefer, a man whose mother mysteriously left him with his father and whose dad, one of the biker family, died when he was 16 years old. With abandonment issues, Reefer has made a promise to himself that he will never allow any female who is not a life-long biker, to become his permanent mate. Yet when he spies Sarah Lightfeather, a visiting nurse, peeking at him and his group as they rode past the home of one of his patients. Little does he know that her dream has always been to ride free from her life even though she loves her patients and loves what she does. What she doesn't love is the fact that she will always carry the scars of having been raised by two alcoholics--a mother who has died of liver disease, and a dad who is even now drinking himself to death.
This is a novel about two people who are kind and caring, genuine in all the right ways, but who are carefully guarding that part of themselves where the old wounds reside. Yet Reefer cannot get Sarah's sweet and beautiful face and smile out of his memories, and as he slowly gets to know her, realizes that she is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. As far as Sarah is concerned, Reefer is everything she has ever dreamed of in a man. So it appears it is a coupling made in heaven. Right? Wrong!! Sure, they manage to "get it on" and spend weeks together, each falling more and more in love with the other. But when two people have not resolved their trust and abandonment issues, it doesn't take much to upend the relationship. That's exactly how it played out between these two.
Ms Kayn has given us two novels that speak plainly about the issues that are probably uppermost in the experience of a large percentage of the human family, and the issues of trust and abandonment by the people who should love us the best are probably closest to our hearts and can hurt us deeply. The saving grace about both these individuals is their willingness to admit their wrongs, to own up to making serious mistakes. But one wonders if it is possible to move on when the person to whom we give our whole heart suddenly appears to be throwing that love and the loved one away like trash. I have pondered that a lot since finishing this book, and I still wonder how someone gets past that. A person may say "I forgive" but I wonder how much residual worry is left below the surface that can crop up at a later time and erode the good in the relationship. I think this book deals with some of that. The book is so well written, the characters are drawn with a sure hand, and the plot and story line clear and move forward. I especially like the fact that there are no long, drawn out sections of internal monologue or that inner debate that some authors seem intent on putting in their stories. (Yawn) It is a good balance between dialogue and those quiet narrative portions of the novel. I also found that the background characters were a hoot with names like Crank, Knuckles, Margarine, etc.
This author has a fine portfolio of published work and this is a good example of a novel written by someone who knows how to put a good novel together. And for readers who like bikers and that sense of the open road, you will enjoy this story. The first novel is equally entertaining and I am glad to have encountered this series, even though it was sort of an accident.

Reefer had two rules: don’t mess around with women who didn’t grow up riding the road, and his biker family always came first. Nothing prepared him for the woman who hopped onto the back of his Harley with the ease of a born rider and peeled back the layers of his sealed heart.
Reefer is a man, biker, whose mother left him with his father at an young age. He promised himself not to fall for a woman outside the biker circle so he doesn't find himself abandoned again. Sarah, a nurse with dreams to ride free, was on her way to attend her patient when she sees the whole Chromes and Wheels gang passing by. She has her own issues with her alcoholic family but that doesn't stop her from falling in love with Reefer. It was a fast love at first sight, lets live together and ride free story. I was not a fan of Refeer when he sent Sarah back but I understood that Debra Kayn wanted to deal with trust and abandon at the same time. Short and sweet story and again I found myself wanting more.
When an author scrubs negative reviews, I don't read the book. DK you're better than that. So many good books, but enough bad ones too so if someone writes a bad review for your bad book, let it stay.
Ride Free by Debra Kayn * I received a copy of this book from Breathless Press in exchange for an honest review*
Sarah grew up on the reservation with an alcoholic father. She has left the reservation and has sworn to never go back. She has dreamed of hitting the open road for as long as she can remember; her patient Ellen has only added fuel to the fire as she shares stories of her time riding with a motorcycle gang. When given the choice to leave with the “end man” of the Chrome and Wheels gang, will she take him up on his offer of the open roads?
Reefer misses his best friend Margie since she has put down roots with her new family. He has grown up on the road with the Wheels and Chrome gang and has vowed to never give his heart to anyone that isn’t part of his world. He never expected someone like Sarah to walk into his life and steal his heart.
Sarah has overcome a lot in her young life. She now devotes her time as a home health nurse but dreams of so much more. She wants to leave when Reefer gives her the choice but she is concerned about leaving her patients. He wants her to be sure that she isn’t going to regret the decision to leave.
Reefer is a complex man. We were introduced to him in Biker Babe and you couldn’t help but fall for him. He has grown up on the road without his mother and resents her deserting him. He has hardened his heart and vows he won’t settle down with anyone unless they are part of his family. He never expected someone like Sarah to break through his defenses. She makes him smile and he sees things through fresh eyes while they are on the road but he never expected betrayal from her.
These two are good for each other. They both have had rough childhoods and grew up without mothers. She envies the life he has lived and wants to be a part of his world. She allows him to see the world through fresh eyes and it gives him a new perspective on life. They are complex and interesting characters that have you pulling for them to work things out.
This was a fun book with lots of interesting characters. It was nice to learn more about the Chrome and Wheels gang that Margie came from. They are a close knit group that looks out for one another. Their acceptance of Sarah was nice to see since they don’t let strangers into their group very often. I also loved the twist at the end, it was very well done.
Overall I really enjoyed the 2nd installment in the Chrome and Wheels series and would love to see more books in this series. I give Ride Free 4 Flaming Hearts.
A delightful and entertaining novel that continues the saga of the Chromes and Wheels Gang and featuring Margarine Butter's best friend and surrogate "brother," Reefer. Filling the most coveted and important position in the biker gang/family, Reefer has long decided that he might "hook up" with women as needed, but no one who wasn't a life-long biker babe would ever be his woman on a permanent basis. That is, until Sarah Lightfeather crosses his path and he is mesmerized by her beautiful face, and charmed and drawn like a magnet to this joyful and entertaining woman. One ride was all it took, yet Reefer kept space and distance between the two of them. Yet Sarah was not willing to let this opportunity pass and she finds a way to keep Reefer from forgetting her. This is a deeply moving story about two people who were made for joy but whose past hurts and disappointments convinced them that real contentment and happiness were not going to be their lot in life. Both Sarah--with her alcoholic parents--and Reefer--with his abandonment issues--were delightful and responsible people, loyal to a fault, and committed to living honest and caring toward those about who they cared. Yet the past kept intruding on their relationship and no matter how deeply they loved each other, they just couldn't seem to get beyond the past. It is a novel that will cause the reader to consider carefully how each of us processes the past--are we moving on and learning the lessons to be learned, or are we allowing past disappointments to influence and possibly poison present and future relationships? Always good questions to face, and this novel has a very fine hand in making that happen. Just a really terrific book!!
A quick read I read it in a nite I enjoyed Sarah always wanted to ride on the back of a Harley and when she walks to her patients house she hears the roar of bikes she stands behind the bush just watching the bikes go past and then she stairs at the end man and he turns around and asks her does she want to ride she wants to but she has to see her patient but she will see him again and then at a rally at the reservation for a sick boy and that's when she meets the end man Reefer she falls in love at sight and that's when she leaves everything behind and sets off with gm on his Harley but there is a few twists and turns on the way but it all ends well great book really enjoyed it xx can't wait to read more from this author x
The first book of this series is being re-released as I type this.
Once I have the fresh new copies on my greedy little hard drive, I'll post fresh reviews. As it stands, this is all I can say on the matter:
I enjoyed both books very much, and despite the mangled editing, it read fairly well. I don't recommend rushing out to buy any version until she announces the re-release, but while your waiting, hop on over to her goodreads profile to score details on how to catch up with the Chromes and Wheels gang by buying a copy of her newly re-released version of "Biker Babe in Black."
This is a powerful story. Packs alot into it. There are alot of emotions throughout it. Debra takes you on a journey to find freedom. With a young Indian woman and a Biker. They are both looking for Love and find it in each other, but there are things set in the way of that love and each has to do their own searching to find what they are looking for. Yes, this book has an HEA, but getting there is work. I hope you enjoy Debra's "Free Ride"
I enjoyed this earlier work of Debra Kayn's, While it is not as edgier as her current biker series which is AMAZING, it was a story that did pull at my heart strings and made me want a HEA for Reefer and Sara. They both were great people in spite of their difficult childhoods. Kayn kept me guessing just how if would all end up and she threw in a few surprises that had me second guessing myself. If you are looking for a fairly mild Biker book with great characters, then check this one out.
I ended up liking this book much more than I thought I would. It started slow for me, but at around 45%, when the leads hit the road on their bike, their relationship heated up, and the gypsy biker family became so much more real. Remy and Margie from the first book also pop up a few times, but all in all, I enjoyed this story a bit more than theirs.
This book really surprised me. I didn't think I'd like it more than the first; after reading the first chapter I thought it was going to be one of those whimsical light reads. It was so much more; I connected with Sarah and it felt personal. It's a rare thing that a book makes me cry. I did several times. Fan for life, Ms. Kayn, fan for life.
i really really wanted to like this book because i really like the biker theme.but i just couldn't. i don't know how old sarah is supposed to be but i always had the feeling she is like 15 years old.the whole book felt rushed and just not real enough.
Sexy, romantic and of course a few ups and downs. It's a biker book. Reefer and Sarah. He was a typical biker and she was ready for an adventure and boy did he deliver. Please tell me there is going to be more books about this gang.....
