Yes, Yes, Yes!!! I recommend this book to every parent I know.
The best thing about this book is that it has given me hope in believing that I am not too late as a parent to an 18 year old who is already out on his own and still needs to learn these vital principles.
The book is well constructed and very easy to understand. While personally highlighting the main and best points I had a hard time not marking everything.
Overall a great book outlining a system to effectively teach kids to be financially competent and wise. I wish I had it earlier.
On the flip side the book is offered as an approach to parenting as well. I did find it lacking in this respect as there are some essential qualities a family needs to have first before seeing the promised success. The authors do give some other references that are helpful but ultimately you still need to figure it out for your own family. But then again I have come to understand through experience that there is no one size fits all for the family experience.
Fantastic resource. I am thrilled to see world class entrepreneurs and leadership experts turn their attention and investment to valuing the next generation. In this book, presentation of a value system for children being supportively encouraged to take risks and learn by their mistakes is laid out. One can see how their progress will exceed typical capacity. Mindsets any motivational guru would be proud of articulating will come naturally and their confidence will become exponential as they naturally embrace an abundance and limitless self-belief. If this sounds idealistic, it is backed up with years of solid and foundational business development to the point of developing a complementary app which gamifies and rewards children's incremental growth especially with regard to financial competence. Parents and mentors, get your hands on this, you will surely be amazed at the relief it brings to the strain and stress of role modelling - from one extreme such as resistance to responsibility for domestic chores right up to avoiding the ultimate tragedy of one's offspring 'failing to thrive'
This is an excellent read for anyone who wants to make a difference in the world. I’m blown away. I picked up this book to learn how to empower my children financially and instead got simple lessons on how to transform the trajectory of my entire family for generations to come. This book embodies its own premise…create value, and it has done so a million times over. I couldn’t be more grateful. This is a must read for every parent, educator, entrepreneur, and leader.
Value Creation Kid by Scott Donnell encourages parents to raise children who are confident, self-sufficient, and focused on adding value to the world. The book challenges the idea that kids should be shielded from all difficulty, instead teaching that “any struggle can be leveraged to bring value to the world if we choose.” Problems are not happening to us but for us, they are opportunities to grow and help others. By cultivating curiosity, replacing excessive screen time with meaningful engagement, and encouraging the mindset that everything is “figure-out-able,” parents can help their kids develop into capable adults with purpose and resilience.
Donnell introduces practical strategies like giving kids jobs or “gigs” to build skills and confidence. Action gigs like as cleaning the garage, organizing the pantry, or doing yard work, develop practical responsibility. Brain "gigs" like watching a TED talk, learning a foreign language, or planning a family trip, strengthen creativity and problem-solving. These activities not only build competence but can also strengthen family bonds. Parents are encouraged to ask, “What’s a problem you found that you could help with this week?” and “Who was a person you helped this week?” By helping children understand that God made them, loves them, and has a purpose for their lives, we can inspire them to “create positive emotional value” that improves the atmosphere around them and equips them to live lives of meaning and impact.
This is basically an infomercial for the authors app. While I found some small takeaways, it was hard to get past the authors’ biases and privilege. Skip the book and try the app if you’re looking to teach your kids financial literacy.
A must read for parents! Go into it knowing the authors are promoting their financial literacy app for kids, but that they also give so many great insights into why healthy struggles are necessary for kids to learn. I think I used up all of my highlighter ink on this one ✍️
The framework provided really makes sense. It's one of those books where you want to read it once end-to-end to get the broad message, but then can't wait to read through again to really implement.
Agree with the other comment made: it is an infomercial for the app the author created. Lacks critical reviews and science to back up the strong biases. Very quick read, no depth or dimension.
