Hoping to find her long-lost mangaka father, Aria sets out to make headlines at Summer Comiket, and even Mikari pitches in to help. Aria fights an uphill battle sewing her costume, but what if after all that effort, the man she longs to see doesn’t show up? The struggles of otakudom continue in volume seven of this hot-blooded romantic comedy!
With Aria and Mikari on board, the plan for a group cosplay with Lilysa and Nonoa that might attract the attention of Aria’s missing father is formed. But nothing is ever that simple and, while the girls might bring the heat, even they can’t beat the sun and that just might put them behind the cleavage curve at Comiket!
This is one of those volumes that you read and think that a series may never get better than this. It’s definitely the best that we’ve seen for these characters yet and it’s pretty much a tour de force the whole way.
It does this with a very clear divide between the prep and the actual minutiae of Comiket and, again, big props to this manga for doing what it does in a wholly different way to My Dress-Up Darling. It would not be as enjoyable if it was just copying that full stop.
The prep phase is a ton of fun as Aria just has to make her own costume and that means Lilysa stepping up to help her and also having to pass muster for Okumura’s very precise otaku eye for detail.
Everybody is just bouncing off everybody else, with Mikari even revealing a surprisingly sweet side and being a good friend, even as she hates doing so because she just wants Okumura’s attention. Okumura’s surprise ninja skills at avoiding gawking at the girls and the line about the cleavage curve nearly steal the show.
Honestly, I think part of the reason this works is that Okumura is absolutely not interested in real girls right now and the manga even acknowledges that he’s basically just a guy with female friends rather than running the standard harem.
With Okumura only having eyes for Liliel and being surprisingly chaste in that regard, minus one monumental nosebleed, it makes this more enjoyable than just the usual sex farce. There’s a goal here for everybody rather than just chasing a guy down and that really makes it work - it’s female friendship forward in the best ways.
(Don’t worry, there’s tons of breast, butt, underwear, and such throughout the book and especially in the typically over-the-top omake for this volume.)
Once we hit up Comiket and Aria realizes just what she’s signed up for, things once again get a little more dramatic as she nearly finishes before she starts and succumbs to the pressures of public performance.
But, as the day goes on and the newly minted foursome learns a harsh lesson about staying hydrated, it turns out that Lilysa is the one who has really come at this from the wrong angle.
There’s a really nice turn to all this that isn’t just about the power of friendship, but also about just what friendship means. For Lilysa that means shouldering all the burdens, but that just comes across to the others as her not having faith.
It absolutely makes sense for everybody to be like this; Lilysa is a total perfectionist when it comes to cosplay, but she also doesn’t expect the others to be able to do so. But that means that she’s not even giving them the chance and I really liked Nonoa finally speaking up for herself about what friends mean to her.
These ecchi cosplay books just get it right by remembering to be about something instead of just a photo book of sexy bits. There’s a lot of silly and sexy in this volume, some of it quite funny, but it remembers to have a heart and the girls solving their own problems while Okumura occasionally helps out was the best way this volume could have gone.
And there’s even a big old support for crossplay too, so go inclusivity!
4.5 stars - seriously, it might not get any better for this series. It’s no classic, but it’s funny, has lots of heart, brings loads of characters back for cameos, and knows exactly what it’s doing. Surprisingly strong.
And as the team grows, it's time to go to Summer Comiket, and the team has to learn on their feet to bring their A-game to the front. I loved the volume, and another great moment is loading for the next volume. So why don't we go along and then just keep on reading.
I have always loved comics, and I can and I have. I love comics to bits, may the comics never leave my side. I loved reading this and love reading more. You should also read what you love, and I hope you will always love it. Even though I grew up reading local Indian comics like Raj Comics, Diamond Comics, or even Manoj Comics, now's the time to catch up on international and classic comics, Mangas, Mahwas, and Graphic novels. I am on my quest to read as many comics as I just want to Keep on Reading.
