Wanko finally manages to land a major role after multiple auditions. At the same time, Ellie reaches a turning point as she works on her original project! The story of the sweet relationship between a twenty-two-year-old rookie voice actress and a thirty-two-year-old scriptwriter reaches its happy ending!
As her star rises, Wanko has to be even more cautious about her relationship with Ellie being discovered. Meanwhile, Ellie gets a proposition of a different sort from Ataru, who’s still harbouring a crush. And the young guy in the apartment complex is having gender struggles. Plus the series ends.
Boy, this has been a rough week for me with yuri series and finales of all sorts. This manga in particular has been lighthearted, but pretty strong, and I’m a little shocked at how slipshod this comes together at the end.
The issue is entirely down to doing too much and not enough at the same time. All sorts of new storylines come to be, but there’s not enough pages to give everything the time it needs and it becomes a real porridge of small storylines that don’t add up to enough.
Wanko getting her big break is such a huge deal, but the repercussions on her relationship with Ellie are just sort of dealt with but not really. They can’t be obvious about loving one another. They aren’t. The end.
Same with the guy who’s unsure of his gender. That looks poised to explore something that is, admittedly, not something that’s ever been on the menu here, but even then it feels like it’s wasting pages more than any deep look at dysphoria.
Beyond the whole buckshot nature of the finale, the actual life of Wanko and Ellie is fantastic. There are some truly golden moments in here - the immaturity of Wanko has been well presented throughout, so seeing her grow up just a little is really charming (plus what Ellie does to celebrate).
And the way they talk about aging and Ellie’s little speech/suggestion towards the end are just the best. That moment is truly stellar and puts a billion love confessions to shame. Again, it would be even better if it went anywhere afterward (okay, the parent dinner is really fun).
It’s not that this is bad, or invalidates the series, but there’s no denying that even with these diamonds in the rough, it could have been a lot better for a final volume. I mean, life doesn’t stop, so they shouldn’t either, but just a bit more focus would have done it wonders.
Heck, Ataru’s dalliance with Wanko’s coworker is never mentioned again and has about zero closure, which is some real ‘what was the point’ energy. At times it feels like the mangaka got bored of things and wanted to do something else, and at others it was super good.
3 stars - great when it’s great, kind of aimless when it isn’t. It’s too bad it added more of the latter instead of focusing in on what it had set up for this final volume.
I've been reading this series from my library all year, and I think that this might be my favorite volume so far, which makes the fact that it's the final one even sadder. I liked that it felt less episodic than previous volumes, more like it's really building toward something while showing you the characters' everyday lives. I just wish that it had been longer, because there are a lot of plot threads that don't get as much time as they need to really shine and come to satisfying conclusions. Kita, the new character who is questioning his gender (though it seems so clear to me that I really should say "the new character who is a closeted trans girl whose egg just cracked"), especially gets short shrift in the ending. I would have loved even just a panel hinting at a happy ending there, or even just at a continued friendship with Sakuma, because their interactions seemed to have a lot of potential for nurturing. I'm just going to headcanon that they keep in touch, and that Sakuma and Wanko give Kita a safe, soft place to land if things get difficult.
(That's all I can say at the moment; I read it in January and apparently didn't make any notes, or, if I did, I can't seem to find them. And I don't remember much, except that. Will be updated once I do.)
This could have been a really solid ending to the series. Everything that had to do with their relationship and the progressions of their jobs was excellent. It was a pretty realistic and satisfying outcome. Some of the plot points with their friends were dropped or not fully addressed, which would be disappointing but not really a big deal since they are all just side hits anyways.
What makes it difficult to say this was a successful ending was the addition of Kita. They (I will use they since what pronouns Kita prefers is never addressed.) are a teen who lives on the same floor of the apartment building. They are clearly a baby transfem and they are treated so awkwardly and poorly, by the mangaka and by the characters themselves. It certainly seems like they were supposed to be something bigger or better formed in the story, but maybe the series was cancelled earlier than planned? I don’t know, but it leaves their inclusion misguided at best and kinda transphobic at worst.
Really enjoyed this volume. The addition of the neighbour high schooler was a nice idea, loved that, could have been explored more, though. The ending came so sudden! Hope the other gets to do a new series soon!
I am a little sad this ended because it felt like their journey was just getting started. A wonderful, cozy slice of life series that's great to read on a rainy day cuddled up under some fuzzy blankets.
Ahhhhh... I wish we got another volume of this. I want to see how Wanko handles her idol show and how Ellie handles her new business partnership and how the transfem kid breaks her egg. Still, it was a really enjoyable series and I'm glad we got this much at least.
A very satisfying conclusion to this romance; I'll miss getting to see them and all of their friends together, but I really loved their growth together and everything that happened.
