Zero’s an arrogant, enigmatic, dangerous hacker.
He wants to protect me.
Pity.
He’s too late. I’m a lost cause.

I narrowly escaped death only to now live on a knife’s edge, constantly checking the shadows for monsters.
And I can’t trust him.
He knows far too much about me, and I know nothing about him.
Even still, this inscrutable stranger burrows his way under my skin and into my heart.

With only a look, Zero makes me feel more alive than ever before.
And that’s the problem.
I should be dead.
I’m the aftermath of a tragedy.

Broken.

A victim.
But he calls me a survivor.
He’s wrong.
There’s no way I’ll cheat death twice, not when it’s breathing down my neck.

It took almost half of the story to catch my interest and even after that I wasn’t engrossed.
I never connected with the characters and they didn’t evoke strong emotions.
So many things were not elaborated and I was left with unanswered questions and loose ends.
Almost everything was wrapped up rather quickly and uninspiringly.

The Many Lives of Leo

SM West Scarred Hearts bk 05 Zero

4.5 stars - Zero has been a side character in this and another series (NY Knights). While I did initially hate him for not interceding with Tommie, he slowly grew on me, and I was elated when Suzanne announced he was going to get his own story. I liked that he redeemed himself over time and that there wasn't a rush to get to where we are with this book.

Enter Morgan. She's a bit of an enigma. A trust fund baby who would rather work for tips at a club / restaurant than touch the family money. At the very beginning, we get to experience the worst moments of her life, when an armed robbery takes the life of another, leaving her broken in ways she barely acknowledges. She's falling apart at the seams when Zero engages with her. I really do love how he acknowledges his weaknesses, most of them anyway, and slowly lets Morgan see that she's not the only one to have experienced the crappy parts of life.

Their chemistry is great, even when Zero won't let her touch him. Of course, once he does... things get very hot, very quickly. Morgan is a bit hot-headed at times (sometimes for justified reasons), and I like how they balance each other when these moments occur.

I did see some of the crazy that was coming their way, but the way it unfolded was terrific. I don't want to give anything away so I will leave it there. 😉

This can definitely be read as a standalone. If you are curious about the earlier books Zero is in, I encourage you to read or listen to them, I know I really liked each of them, but it's not a requirement to enjoy this one.

While this is a bit of a dark book, much of the shadier sides of humanity occur off-screen with snippets here and there of horrible occurrences. Do be aware that human trafficking and some of the things that go along with that are discussed. There are still some violent and other content-sensitive scenes.

I received an author's copy of the audio book. The narrators are Lucy Rivers and Aaron Shedlock. I really like Aaron... mmm... and Lucy's pretty good, too. Duet narration would've made the experience even better, but this is still a good listen.

Oh boy...
I just couldn't connect with the characters...
I couldn't even get into the story, it was an unusual plot, intriguing at first BUT it soon came with so many loop holes...and the side characters were not sustainable...:/
It was all so fastly wrapped up but it wasn't believable for me

Morgan is from a wealthy family, but that means nothing when she is crippled by survivor's guilt; Zero doesn't 'do' people, preferring to work remotely at his keyboard, but faced with a big decision, he sees Morgan's issues as a way of putting off making a choice.
SM West's latest can be read as a stand-alone, but features characters from other stories. It is magnificent. She handles the serious problems faced by the protagonists sensitively and delicately, especially Zero's. Probably the most damaged hero I have come across, his emotional growth under his developing feelings for Morgan is as honest a piece of writing that I have read. Morgan's gradual acceptance of him is convincing and reai.
I loved this, from the Easter egg linking this to earlier stories, to the conceit of Cary and his sisters' names, to the HEA that these two damaged people deserved.
First class.

(audiobook) It wasn’t exactly a let down as I still enjoyed the book, but some of its elements did bother me.

I found the characters interesting. The tragedy that starts the book was such a shock, for Morgan and for me. It sort of sets the mood of the story. And we see Morgan before, and Morgan after. She’s a broken character. She still shows some strength, and I liked that. She’s paired with Zero, a recluse with a dark past who uses his computer skills to do good. The book is really about how they slowly connect and heal each other.

And that’s the first thing that annoyed me a little. They become this special someone for each other, for which they break their rules, yet I didn’t see how they came to that conclusion. Attraction, yes, sure. A bit intrigued, why not–for the reasons stated above. But such devotion requires a level of connection I didn’t see here.

I thought the tough topics were handled with care. I didn’t see much manicheism–except for the traffickers and buyers who are human garbage. The trauma associated with being a victim of a trafficking ring isn’t glossed over, and survivor guilt is a thing.

While it is a standalone, a couple of characters and references were a bit confusing without having read the previous books. And some plot points are left open by the end of the book. I felt sometimes that I missed the beginning and the end of the story. It wasn’t too bothersome though.

Narrators were good, but I wasn’t a fan of the voices they did for the other sex. Those narrators together would have been better in duet narration in my opinion. I especially didn’t like the female narrator’s male voice. They had the right energy for their own character though.

Quickie

- Series: Scarred hearts #5 (can be read as a standalone, but linked to other books by the same author)
- Hashtags: #romantic suspense #survivors #PTSD
- Triggers: human trafficking, mention of past abuse, violence, death, substance use and abuse
- Main couple: Morgan Rothwell & Zero
- Hotness: 3/5
- Romance: 3/5
- + the author was sensible enough to not write anything graphic about Zero’s childhood
- – I couldn’t see why Morgan was so special to Zero

Just when I think we've seen her best, West gives us a romantic suspense like this! I was eager to get to know Zero since we got a few glimpses of him in Griffin's book, but I was NOT ready for this! It starts out with a bang and then builds from there.

Zero is a mystery wrapped in an enigma and punctuated with a question mark. All of his work is behind the scenes, and he's the most solitary of lone wolves. But the work he does is vital and important, and no bad guy will be able to hide for long with Zero on the job.

In his regular practice of monitoring police scanners, Zero hears about a case that intrigues him and has him stepping out from behind his keyboard. Somehow he develops a fondness for a crime victim, Megan Rothwell, and he's compelled to make sure Megan is safe.

This one surprised me at every turn. First Zero having to win Megan over, and let's just say Zero isn’t the most suave and charming guy in the room. I appreciated how Zero pushed himself out of his comfort zone, and I loved the way he took Elvis under his wing. Then there was Hazel. I wondered if we would see her again, and hoo boy, did we ever!

Although we get some cameos from our Hart Corp. friends, this story stands alone, and if you’re at all a fan of romantic suspense, you'll love this one. Heartfelt romance, riveting suspense, characters who learn and grow, and friends who accept you just as you are and make you family are the cornerstones of this fantastic read. Hypnotic, addictive, and adrenaline-fueled, with shocking surprises that keep you on the edge of your seat, this masterful, phenomenal romance is sure to please even the toughest critic.

I wondered while reading Griffin's story why Zero was the way he was...and now I know!

Watching what Morgan had to endure—and then the guilt that followed—I knew that Zero was going to be the perfect partner for her.
Yes, they were miles apart in terms of life experience and he was a little closed off but, the more he opened up, the more I could see their bond building.

I really enjoyed his relationship with Elvis, I hope we get to see more from him somewhere down the line.

I recognised the significance of the pots as soon as I saw them mentioned—but I'm not going to ruin that lovely twist for new readers—and to say I was surprised would be a lie. I always knew there was something a little odd there.

While it may be the last book in this series—and I'm a little sad that it's over—it was still as gripping and interesting as the earlier ones.

A fabulous read with a few twists to keep your mind spinning.

**Audio Review**
Zero by S.M. West was a wild, spicy, and suspenseful ride that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Zero and Morgan’s journey to HEA is full of steamy twists and spicy turns that will captivate your attention. This book can be listened to as a stand-alone but is a part of the Scarred Hearts series.

Aaron Shedlock and Lucy Rivers narrate this audiobook. I love the tone and the energy these two brought to S.M. West’s words. Aaron showcased Zero’s past trauma, strengths, and dedication to Morgan brilliantly. Plus. Lucy did a fantastic job portraying Morgan’s conflicted and determined persona. Both, Aaron and Lucy brought the heat with Zero and Morgan’s magnetic chemistry.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. If you are a fan of a suspense romance with a hot guarded computer hacker, a woman on the edge, danger, traumatic pasts, bodyguards, super hot steamy times, loyal friends, helping those in need, an epic jaw-dropping climax, and a HEA that will make your heart race, then you will love Zero and Morgan’s story. I always look forward to more from S.M. West.

Amazing dual narration from Lucy Rivers and Aaron Shedlock. Bring out the suspense, action and heat.

Morgan may come from a wealthy family, but because of her past, she is crippled by survivor's guilt; Zero prefers to work remotely at his keyboard. Best way of describing him he is not a people person. The two of them find that they need each other. Both hiding, both finding strength from their past.

This book is full of emotions and strength. Wonderful characters.

Part of the Scarred Hearts series, though the titles are interconnected, they stand alone. Zero appears in the previous book of the series Griffin, so if you're going to prep with a single story, I would read that one first to get your interest in Zero tickled.

Zero is a keyboard warrior. He's a hacker, and information seeker and tech specialist that works to fight against human trafficking among other crimes. He wants to save the victims, he wants to punish the criminals and he wants to do it in the fastest way possible, which sometimes means working outside the system, but in the end, the officials are given all they need to locate and prosecute the evildoers.

Morgan was the victim of a terrible random act of violence. She is now trying to recover from this trauma and survivors guilt that has changed her life immensely.

Zero is drawn to Morgan, to her need for justice, to the desire to help her heal and become a whole person again. He wants to be near her, to spend time with her and to make sure she is able to move on with her life. But the more time he spends with her, the more he wants to be able to be part of her life.

It took a bit to ramp up on this one, but the suspense and the build was worth it for me. I was very engrossed by the end, needing to find out what was going to happen next and trying to put all the pieces together for myself before the characters.

There are some heavy topics in this one, so beware the trigger warnings: Drug abuse, violence (including death), discussions of Human Trafficking and sexual abuse.

The audiobook was performed by Aaron Shedlock and Lucy Rivers. Aaron was fantastic as Zero, the care and emotion that was given to his backstory and motivations, I really felt for him. I found Lucy to be a bit of a fast talker at first in the baseline narration, but as the story progressed I got used to it and found it to be very genuine to the character in the end and I found myself keeping up with the pace.

I requested and was provided with an advance copy of the audiobook. These are my honest opinions.

Review: 4/5 ⭐️
Steam: 2.5/5 🔥
Audio: 4.5/5 🎧

This is my second book by this author and I really enjoyed it. There’s the romance, suspense, thrill and overcoming obstacles, but also has some deep issues that should have one check the trigger warnings just Incase.

Zero is damaged from his past, and instead of living fully away from others, he wants to help those who’ve been through similar situations. For someone who’d rather hide behind his keyboard, he finds comfort in helping people break out of their peronsal hell. He doesn’t build relationships, he prefers the silence and solitude of his homes. But when he’s listening to a 911 call, something shifts inside him, and his world is changed. Can he let down his own walls or is he way past the point of ever allowing anyone in again?

Morgan was full of life and wanted to find someone to be with. Until one night completely changed her life. Now she constantly lives in fear, riddled with anxiety, where she thinks only a pill can help. Her life is spiraling until she feels him. This man is showing up everywhere and for once, she feels safe. She tries to break down Zero’s walls but keeps coming up short. Can these two broken souls find their spaces in each others lives or is the possibility of a relationship too much?

Aaron and Lucy did a really great job with the narration here. I feel like I was able to know exactly what emotions were going through them during the heights of tension, thrill and fear. I’d definitely recommend this series to anyone, especially the audio.

I was looking forward to getting Zero’s story after reading Griffin. I was extremely curious about him after the little tidbits of info given by both Cora and Griffin in that book. I had an idea of who and what he was, but this book definitely had me throwing all my preconceived notions away.

Zero is a very complicated character with a difficult and horrible past. A past which has shaped him in almost all facets of his life, but most impacted his interactions and relationships with others. Almost immediately, I could tell that he was genuinely trying to help, and not just Morgan.

He said some things to Morgan that seemed so simple, but we’re obviously difficult for him to express. He spoke plainly for the most part and was very matter of fact, and yet some of what he said was so earthshaking because they came from him. I 100% loved Zero!

The very first part of this book had me rooting for Cary and Morgan. They were playful and carefree, and honestly had me smiling. So I was obviously thrown for a loop after what happened that fateful night.

I can understand her fears and her desire to protect herself and even her contact with Grace. I get her anxiety and how afraid and overwhelmed she was. What I didn’t understand was why she was away from her family. I did love that after all was said and done, she found a way to use her trust in a way to help others.

I somewhat had an idea that a particular character was “off” but had no clue how far they’d go!

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest opinion.

Get ready because this book is an emotional gut punch. The first chapter had me in tears as we are introduced to Morgan and the life changing situation she is dealt with. Zero in his job has stumbled across Morgan and something about her has captured his attention. He has vowed to solve her case and get her the justice she deserves. Zero is an enigma and I didn’t know much about him when I started this book. His backstory is just as heart wrenching and has made him closed off. Morgan is the first person that he’s wanted to know who he truly is. This book dealt with heavy topics that had you rooting for the main characters to find their way to a happily ever after. I’m really loving this series and the characters that have been created. This whole world is well written and keeps me coming back for more.

LEAVE THE BEST FOR LAST!

This author has astounded me in the past with her Scarred Hearts series but this book absolutely floored me!

It had me gripping my kindle from the first page right up to the last!

Zero was a heart rendering character with his past as a trafficking victim and drug addict and his edict of no touching and kissing on the lips until he meets the woman who he can break that rule for!

This story is heartfelt with twists and turns that are jaw dropping ahh sh#t moments that will have you clenching your seat or biting your nails!

I loved Zero and Morgan as a steamy dynamic couple and how they brought out the best in each other!

I always look forward to more from this amazing author!.

This story is full of hard topics that will leave you hurting for the victims. It has a few twists and turns that leave you unable to put it down.

Morgan has a lot of guilt over what happened to Cary. Her life has changed drastically since that night. “The police say I’m safe, and yet I can’t shake the feeling things aren’t over.” My days are spent working at a local club, and going to a shooting range. That's where I met him.

Zero is a complicated character with a horrendous past. He did what he needed to do to survive but feels he let those down that needed him the most. Now he feels responsible to rid the world of nasty, evil humans. So that is why he is watching Morgan, he needs to help her.

**Audiobook Review**

Ever since finishing “Griffin”, I have been waiting for Zero’s story for all the questions I had about him. “Zero” is a suspenseful, emotional and intriguing story about Zero and Morgan fighting through some terrible demons from their pasts.

Zero had been working with Griffin behind the scenes to help people who needed it the most. Now with an opportunity to go with a new company with even more support, Zero is unsure of what he wants to do. Zero meets Morgan one night and something about her calls to him. Morgan is running from something herself and is always looking over her shoulder for trouble to find her again. Zero vows to help her and as they get to know each other, a spark between them starts to ignite.

I loved Zero and everything that he stood for. His past absolutely broke my heart but his strength to overcome it and help others was so admirable. Morgan was an instant like for me and the last few months of her life were unbelievably hard. Her survivor's guilt was strong and having Zero in her corner helped her overcome some of that. I loved the instant chemistry they had, I could feel it as I listened to their story. But with Zero’s past, the two had a lot to overcome that led to the building of a solid foundation. The added suspense to the story was so good and I couldn’t stop listening until all the pieces were brought together.

Aaron Shedlock and Lucy Rivers were the perfect choices for Zero and Morgan. Aaron brought all of Zero’s grittiness and vulnerability to life perfectly. Lucy did a great job of bring Morgan’s genuine and emotional personality to life.

Gripping, action-packed & compelling!

After meeting Zero in the previous book in the series, Griffin, I was excited to drive into this book to finally get his story. And, S.M. West did not disappoint.

The book follows Zero, a hacker who works outside of the law to help victims of crime. After he comes across a case that intrigues him, he meets crime victim Morgan. Morgan herself, having gone through a traumatic event, feels both guilt for surviving, but also knows deep down she isn’t completely safe yet. Zero vows to help her stay safe.

This story is both suspenseful and romantic in the best ways. I was rooting for them as a couple, as well as for the mystery to be solved. Both characters were complicated and S.M. West really dove into and explored many hard topics including addiction and trafficking. This book was gripping, addictive, compelling, fast-paced, and action-packed.

A traumatic event has her living her life numb, pills and alcohol. Morgan is spiralling out of control.
Zero is an avenger, his skills has his finding evil and handing them over. Her case intrigues him, someone needs to be brought to justice. He has a history of his own, broken and closed off. Can they heal each other.
People in their lives may not be who they seem, danger is all around. Will Morgan be able to survive?
This was a great story, the plot dark and yet handled well. I loved the characters, even the one I loved to hate.
Fantastic read, I highly recommend it.

SM West brings us another emotional, action packed suspenseful romance with strong characters.

Morgan is carrying a lot baggage around from past events that have greatly impacted her life. Bad news, she’s in danger.

Zero has a traumatic past yet he is filled with strength, determination and become fiercely protective of Morgan.

Through tough circumstances these two come together in a wonderful story filled with twist, turns and romance.

Another great book by S.M. West. I was invested in listening to this audio that I hated for it to end, which it ended too soon it had just started. I love Zero and Morgan together. This series is full of new hot book boyfriends. I like the writing of this author and will have to look at the other books she has written. I didn't like the male narrator for this book, don't get me wrong I like Aaron Shedlock but his voice doesn't go with the character I have in my head. I really like Lucy Rivers, she brought her character to life real well.

This is tough review to leave. For most of this read, I didn't really understand Zero, or like him. But, at the end of this story, I actually think it is better than Griffin and Cora's story. See? Conflicted.

So when this read begins, Morgan's situation is terrible and certainly threw me. Then Zero decides to "help" her.
I couldn't reconcile their connection.
Hazel bugged me (IYKYK) but I really enjoyed how Zero was with Elvis.
So, most of the time, my feelings about him were up and down.

But...I REALLY appreciate the skill and creativity this author has, in crafting a story that kept me flipping pages, and invested in the storyline and the characters, even though I didn't love them (at the time).

And then...
the image sharpened.
*light bulb*
I had a better understanding of what was actually going on. It was wonderful!
Morgan was perfect for Zero, and I enjoyed the transformation in their relationship, and Zero's personal growth.

I can't say I instantly loved this one, parts were hard, but overall - I really enjoyed this read. The pages turned themselves in the last third of this book, and my pulse was racing! It was soo good!

It is my suggestion that you read Griffin before this one, for the best experience. I was fortunate to receive my free ARC from Booksprout and I voluntarily leave my review.

Fabulous
People, each suffering their own anguish, but both self sufficient in how they deal with it.
Zero has a trouble past for years within the sex trafficking industry as a teenager. He now works in solitude helping others, using his skills via the dark web, linking in to the FBI and agencies as necessary.
Morgan is suffering guilt after being with her date and a gunman shot him. Turning to relying on Xanex and drink helps numb her pain, but does affect her reasoning at times.
Hazel, self absorbed and obsessive friend of Zero, when not on her meds. Fellow captive with and totally dependent on him.
Lots of opportunities for things to go wrong. Emotions feed behaviour. Mayhem lurks in the shadows and it may come from unexpected sources.
The author has again produced an interesting storyline within this series.

This was such a good story that really hits you in the heart, and makes you feel emotions that feel all too real. The book dives into some dark & traumatic issues for both Zero and Morgan and had me on the edge of my seat. There were so many twists and turns I was not expecting at all, but absolutely made sense when they were revealed. I wasn’t sure these two could survive what they had been through or if either would give in to the other.

I don’t want to say too much and give away the story, but this is one book & series that I really do recommend! This author knows how to create such an amazing world and well developed characters that feel relatable. One-click now, you’ll be glad you did!

Zero is not very social and a Hacker. Morgan is caught in a bad situation that haunts her. Of course Zero being a Hacker knows what happened to her. When they meet she is at a disadvantage because although he knows more about her, she knows nothing about him.
Anyway this pair end up being just what the other needs. They heal each other, it was different kind of story but a good read.

Morgan is a young woman who sees how her life changes when she survives a robbery where a boy dies to save her. Survivor's guilt is leading her down a path filled with misery and substance abuse.
Zero is a hacker who agrees to help Morgan, and unexpectedly falls in love with her.
The story is not bad, although something was missing to finish hooking me.

I’ve fully embraced my romantic suspense era and this book was perfect. The opening was traumatic and things escalated from there. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the MMC being a bit stalker-y at first, but he grew on me fast. The last-act breakup annoyed me, especially because it put her in even more danger and felt like it came out of nowhere, but I loved everything else so much that I can forgive it. Definitely excited to go back and read book one in this series.

Well we definitely saved the best for last, good old Zero. I have been waiting for his book for a while, trying to imagine what woman was going to come along and bring him to his knees and let me tell you Morgan did not disappoint! I absolutely love Morgan she is exactly the right person that Zero needs in his life. Someone that will stand up to him and not put up with his bs, she will give and good as she gets it from him. She snuck up on him, he was in no way looking for her and she crawled into his life. She made him feel things that he has never felt before and awoken parts of himself that have been dormant for a long time. Morgan has had a rough couple of years and she is just trying to keep her head above water and honestly isn’t doing to hot, when Zero comes into her life. They have this strange connection that neither of them understand but they can’t stay away from the other. The more time they spend together, the closer they become they develop this relationship that turns into this beautiful thing. One that is starting to heal both of their wounds from their pasts. Thought all the curveballs that get thrown their way throughout the story they find their way back to each other. I’m so glad that they got their happily ever after. I highly recommend this story.
