This biographical-like work on Hatch, published 24 years ago, provides a window into the life of the longest-serving Republican Senator in the United States. The portrait of Hatch’s family history and Orrin’s personal and intellectual development was well done, though one hopes that with the Senator retiring, a fuller portrait can be painted of how his intellectual ideas were shaped. For instance, there is little exploration of Hatch’s changing beliefs around labor unions, nor to how his spirituality affected his political values.

It is an overwhelming friendly portrait, but much of that is no doubt due to the fact that there is much to admire in Senator Hatch’s conduct: if only more Congresspeople wrote poetry, read widely (including works challenging their values), and developed genuine relationships with legislators across the aisle...

interesting read. like how it showed a faithful LDS in government and how he balanced the two.

I learned a lot about Brother Hatch, and different political people my friends dad wrote this. I am glad I read it.
