Treating Bulimia in Adolescents: A Family-Based Approach

Rate this book
An indispensable clinical resource, this groundbreaking book is the first treatment manual to focus specifically on adolescent bulimia nervosa. The authors draw on their proven approach to treating anorexia nervosa in the family context and adapt it to the unique needs of this related yet distinct clinical population. Evidence-based strategies are presented for helping the whole family collaborate to bring dysfunctional eating behaviors under control, while also addressing co-occurring psychological problems and parent–child relationship conflicts. Highly practical, the book shows exactly how to carry out this time-limited therapy and what to do when problems arise. Special features include annotated session transcripts and answers to frequently asked questions.

I am fully on-board with using parents as a key resource in the adolescents recovery process, and I love how FBT brings parents in as primary supports in collaboration with the adolescent. I think this approach might be very valuable for relatively less complex cases of bulimia. I'm less convinced of the utility for more complex cases with greater comorbidities (particularly those that include a host of other dysregulated behaviours such as substance use and self-harm, which may serve similar functions for the adolescent--I worry about the adolescent merely switching behaviours, thus improving the eating disorder but worsening in other areas). I would have loved to read more about helping the family to navigate these behaviours when they serve emotion regulation purposes.

(APA buy) lock and legrange! we heard them speak! complete pioneers in the field, am looking forward to this after hearing them talk about the importance of family in treatment (since families aren't often brought in in strict behavioral treatments, etc.)
