Jacqueline Baird was born on the 1st of April at home in a small village Northumbria, England, UK, where she raised. She went to the local village school, and later an all-girls' grammar school where she passed the University of Oxford General Certificate of Education in various subjects. On leaving school she joined the civil service in the then Post Office department.

She met her husband Jim, when she was only eighteen. Eight years later, after working as a hotel receptionist in a five-star hotel in Scotland and traveling abroad for a few years, she came home and married him. They still live in Northumbria and have two grown sons.

Her number one love is writing. She has always been an avid reader, and she had her first success as a writer at the age of eleven, when she won the first prize in the Nature Diary of the Year competition at school. But she always felt a little guilty because her diary was more fiction than fact. Apart from a spell as a hopeful painter in oils, when she actually did have a painting accepted for the Federation of Northern Artists' annual exhibition her real passion was for romance novels. When her sons went to school all day she thought she would try writing one. Jacqueline Baird's been writing for Mills & Boon since 1988, and she still gets a thrill every time a new book is published.

When Jacqueline is not busy writing she likes to spend her time traveling, reading and playing cards. She was a keen sailor until a knee injury ended her sailing days, but she still enjoys swimming in the sea. She visits a gym twice a week now and has made the surprising discovery that she gets some good ideas while doing the mind-numbingly boring exercises on the cycling and weight machines.

Re A Husband of Convenience- Jacquline Baird takes on the keepin' it in the family trope.

Conan the H in this one is most likely JB's nicest H ever. He is totally in love with h Josie who got preggers when she got drunk and had sex with his half brother who then conveniently drove over a land mine and died.

The whole experience was a washout for Josie, who only had a crush on Conan's brother, because the sex bit was awful and then Conan walked in on them.

Josie had pretty much written men off, but then HPlandia rule #2 kicked in, (Unicorn groomers are magnets for bun baking,) and now Josie has some disapproving dads to face down.

(It is okay tho, cause Conan's dad is an utter snot snarfer anyways and only liked the dead guy AND likes to mooch off rich banker Conan. Josie's dad just wants Josie to be happy and worries that he did not do a good job of dading, since Josie's mum died years earlier.)

Through the manipulations of both Josie's and Conan's dad, Conan coerces Josie into marriage and then they miscommunicate for five months until Josie gets amnesia.

Josie now thinks Conan married her for love and not because his father threatened to leave Josie and her child the family estate. So Josie and Conan have a lovely purple passion lurve clubing time being utterly devoted and in love - until Conan's wanna be OW secretary, Angela, nastily reminds Josie of just how her marriage came about.

Josie is horrified at the woman's erroneous statements, so she leaves Conan to return the family pile- which Conan has completely revamped for his new little family. Josie has a lovely little girl and Conan tries really hard to be a good dad, he even changes nappies.

But when Angela again injects some venom by lying to Josie about Conan's whereabouts when he is on a business trip, Josie pretty much kicks him to the curb. Then Conan gives Josie his beloved estate and Josie realizes that she has to sort things out, cause if Conan only married her to get the family pile from his dad, why would he give it to her?

Josie goes to confront Conan, who declares he loves her madly for the FIFTIETH time and Josie admits she loves him back. No word on the whereabouts of the skeevy Angela, but Conan swears there was never anything between them and Josie believes him, (I did too,) and we leave them lurving it up for the big HEA.

This is a cute story. The non demise of Angela is about the only flaw. Conan is an utter sweetie pie and he is so desperate for Josie, that he will just about do anything, including lie his head off, to keep her.

Josie is a stubborn lady, but I liked her too. So I rate this one a 4.5 and consider it a most enjoyable HP outing.

The hero was smitten with the heroine from their first meeting, but his awful older brother got her drunk and seduced her – in the hero’s bed. Hero even saw the blood on the sheets and knew heroine had been a virgin. Why yes, I find that squicky, too.

Fast forward six weeks. Hero’s brother is dead. Heroine is pregnant and hero marries her to give the child a name and to secure his inheritance.

Heroine is very angry/guilty/confused about her lust for the hero. She fell out of love with the brother after that one night stand, but she resists the hero at every turn. The H/h try. They have truces and then jealousy or a misunderstanding crops up stalling the consummation their marriage. There is an OW from hell that the heroine is jealous of. The hero is jealous of his dead brother.

It’s starting to get tedious until the heroine is in a car accident and then has amnesia. (Amnesia, the author’s friend) H/h finally have sex and they are getting along fine until the heroine gets her memory back after an encounter with the OW.

H/h are together when the baby is born. Then another argument and separation until the heroine goes to the hero and apologizes for her insults. HEA

This was too much of a bickerfest for me. Heroine kept putting her foot in her mouth and she wouldn’t tell hero the whole story. Same with the hero. They obviously had the hots for each other so I can believe their HEA. But they were not much fun to spend time with. Lots of drama, though.

You won’t be bored.

Not a fan of the amnesia plot and hero's raising the son of his brother.
This is a book by Jacqueline Baird to AVOID for me 🥴 She is one of my favorite romance authors and I LOVE many books by her, but this book doesn't work for me.

Update
April 30/2022

I just want to clarify that I don't have nothing against nieces and nephews in real life 🙌 but I have a problem in romance stories where heroine has been the sister in law of the hero. I could do an exception if the heroine have been married in name only (you know in Harlequins everything can happens 😆) It's the same for me when the heroine has her own love story with her brother in law, and the hero has to raised his nephew/niece as his children, I'm not a fan of those plots.

Nice, soap-opera-ish tale of a h and a H who were always meant to be together but were kept apart by wicked family members and misunderstandings. Luckily, amnesia saved the day. Sexy H and decent h, all in all, not a bad read at all.

Stupid story where dumb heroine has drunken sex and gets knocked up by hero’s loser brother. Beta hero spots opportunity to swoop in to clean up the mess, marry brother’s leavings, insert himself as step-daddy and wrap up this contrived story.

A marriage of convenience...by Jacqueline Baird. She certainly has a way of letting you know just how the hero feels. I was a little disconcerted on this one, because the bickering, and misunderstandings seemed to go on and on...Too much was getting rehashed.

Another Treasury book and another classic trope - marriage of convenience - and one that is done very well by Jacqueline Baird.

There is a lot of reality to this story, such as the heroine regretting her mistake of sleeping with her ex and the difficulties two people face learning to live with one another, and that makes this an enjoyable book to read.

The heroine is nicely independent as well as a but prickly - for the most part I liked her.

The star of the show here though is the hero... right for the first he fell hard for the heroine and spent the rest of their time trying to show her despite having so many obstacles. I love this kind of story and hero.

I could have done without the small amnesia part - or have had it introduced earlier in the story - as it was, it felt a little crowbarred in.

Overall this is a well written, classic story with a pretty much perfect hero!

4 Stars ~ Discovering herself 5 weeks pregnant, engaged to a man she does not love, Josie is shocked to learn her fiance has died. She's relieved and feeling guilty about that, as she had intended to tell Charles she wouldn't be marrying him. But surprises haven't ended for Josie, as Charles' half-brother, Conan has offered a marriage of convenience. Josie's baby will have the Zarcourt name, something his father insists on, and Conan will in exchange receive title from his father for the family estate. Although Josie is prepared to have her baby on her own, she worries about coping with her elderly father who tends to depend on her and an infant, so she agrees. The only thing that really concerns Josie about the marriage is her own physical reaction to Conan; just a touch from him sends her heart racing. At first their marriage is amiable, with Conan giving Josie time to get over Charles death. Josie never confided that she didn't love Charles, and Conan thinks she's been mourning the father of her baby. Conan has never hidden his own very strong attraction to Josie, and slowly he's been wearing down her defences with passionate kisses and touches. Josie welcomes the direction her marriage is heading. When a female business colleague hints that she's been having an affair with Conan, Josie is tremendously hurt and she starts to doubt the sincerity of Conan's advances. An argument leads to Josie moving back to the country estate from London, and one day on icy roads she has an auto accident. She wakes up a week later, baby just fine, but the knock on her head has lead to temporary amnesia. She has knowledge but no memory. And so she believes Conan when he shows her that their's is a loving marriage. Once out of the hospital, Josie confesses to Conan after making love, that she feels like she's known him forever, that he is her soul mate. For a few months they are wonderfully happy, and then that other woman spouts off more evil lies. Shocked by what this woman says, Josie starts to remember the past, and that the marriage had been based on convenience. Conan had married her to gain the family estate, not for love at all.

At the start of this story, Josie is a 20 year old woman coming to terms with an unexpected pregnancy. Though she tries to be mature her inexperience makes her insecure. Conan was taken with Josie from the first time he seen her, and was bitterly upset when his brother took advantage of her. He hides his feelings for her thinking she actually did love Charles. Afraid of losing her, he tends to be over protective and controlling. He didn't know about the lies from the other woman, and is tremendously hurt when Josie rejects him because of those lies. Keeping the true nature of their marriage to himself, he thinks is his only chance to get close to her. And all through this time, Josie is maturing. And finally she snaps and stands up for herself. I loved those scenes! This was a slow starter but it really gained steam. A very enjoyable read.

Alternate Book title : Husband of Convenience

Available on Open library.

This one was just okay. It started off well with an obviously smitten Hero, that, despite everything he does, the heroine fails to see his true feelings. I just felt bad for him for most of the book, beginning with his tragic back story and his relationship with his father and brother, he really got the short end of the stick.

His slimeball brother, takes advantage of the heroine and gets her pregnant, (only because he knew the Hero wanted her) It’s not rape since the heroine was infatuated with the brother, but, it’s a bit of dubious consent since she was drunk at the time. Anyway, the slimeball dies at the start of the book and this becomes the basis for the angst between the couple.

The Hero proposes to the heroine so she can have a husband and father for her baby, but he thinks she is still in love with the brother. The heroine had already been having second thoughts about marrying the brother, but since he died, and she has been feeling guilty about not loving him, she never tells anyone and especially her husband, that she no longer has feelings for her dead fiance.

They go on in this manner, constantly misunderstanding each other. There is the usual evil other woman, who causes even more tensions between the couple. Why are the OW characters always so boldly confrontational? I seriously never met anyone in real life who would say or act as these women do!

Then, there is a bit of amnesia to show us that the couple can actually have a loving, perfect relationship, were it not for the memories of the past, but then the heroine gets her memory violently jogged, compliments of the OW, and we are back to square one.

Finally, the Hero gives her his country estate, so she decides he can’t be all bad. I almost shouted “You go girl!” in my head, but since she’s the heroine, it’s understood that she’s not really a gold digger, despite all evidence to the contrary. She just finally realises the generosity of his heart....so we have a happy ending.

Since the Hero just really really really wanted the heroine, he’ll be happy too.

No resolution for evil OW, presumably she still works for the Hero and despite her attempts at marriage sabotage she gets away Scot free.😡

2.5 MEH STARS

A marriage of convenience to the brother of the man who got her pregnant, Josie struggles with the attraction she feels for Conan, especially when she is so unsure about what he wants. When she has an accident leading to a serious case of amnesia, she remembers nothing and is pretty accepting of what Conan tells her (a tad too accepting).

Not a read that's left much of an impression, it all was just a tad too underwhelming.

Actually very different from usual JB trope. This one has a nice and caring hero and a ott nasty heroine. She’s actually one of the worst heroine ever.
She had a teenage crush on hero’s older brother, who was a sleazy scumbag of a manwhore. He basically gets her drunk and has sex with her because he knows the hero likes her and he’s a mean jealous jerk so he wants to spoil everything the hero wants. He gets her pregnant but dies in a mission.
The hero offers marriage to the heroine and makes it like it is a moc, but actually we know he’s loved her since he saw her.
The heroine is mean and always offensive while he tries to be gentle and patient.
She’s also jealous of a nasty would be ow, that is why I would have liked that for once the hero actually cheated on her. She didn’t want to have sex with him and was also pregnant with his brother’s child, but wanted him not to have other women. How bitchy is this?
He’s always nice, caring, she always pushes him away.
He’s also loving and caring with her child, not a mean word from him mouth. He’s too much for her. He confesses he always loved her but thought she was in love with his brother. She was. Only in the very end she tells him she loves him.
I hated this heroine and wanted the hero to cheat on her and this says much about how awful she really was. She should have been left alone and pregnant.

—SPOILER—

Ok there was some craziness in this one....but it was good crazy. Boogenhagen’s review encompasses most of what I would Want to say which is good as I won’t need to spend the next hour writing a review.

Hero(Conan)- falls in love with heroine at first sight(maybe that’s why his pick up line was so cheesy, he was overwhelmed with love), opportunity knocks and he does not hesitate to tie h to his life...he is tying her to him by choice which is a nice change .... he isn’t wanting to exact some misguided revenge or being manipulated by others to do so

Heroine- had a crush on the om(1/2 brother to H). He is not a prince disguised as a frog...he truly is a frog.(hmm, sorry frogs even you shouldn’t be lumped in with such pond scum) The H is the one and true prince. Our h figures out pretty quickly that she loves the H and has never loved the OM. ( the om impregnated her on first go, but although his precision was good the technique has left our little h not wanting a repeat performance from the male species ever again!)

THERE are some SPOILERS in this part, but they are all exposed in chapter 1 and 2.

OM- 1/2 brother Charles.....The only good thing I have to say about Good ole’ Charlie is that he is pronounced dead on the first page of the book(oh and because of him we got a great story from JB)
Charles is the older 1/2 brother of our H. He has been spoiled his whole life. He takes what he wants. He is the favored son(our poor H is the result of a loveless marriage and wasn’t even wanted by mumsy)
Charles stakes claim to our h partly because the H showed interest...our poor H walks away disheartened...
Fast forward 3 dates and the h is with good time Charley at a party at his house. He plies her with alcohol(just enough to lower her defenses) and takes her virginity...in the Hero’s bed. He leaves her in the bed and tells her he will be back. Meanwhile the H walks in and stuns her with the announcement that this is his bedroom, he gets quite an eye full and deduces from the sheets that this experience was her first time(yea, so nice of the om) Charles walks in proud as a peacock(there is no doubt in he did this on purpose) stakes claim to h again (they become engaged on the spot with H taking them both down to dad and announcing it) then Charles drunkenly goes to the other room to hit on a red head while h is taken home by the H who proceeds to kiss her Sabrina(Audrey Hepburn version) and tells her it’s all in the family.

Let the love story begin....(there is a wannabe ow in the story that causes a lot of issues, but I will leave sweet Ang for you to find out....

I had been dying to read this novel ever since I came across it a few months ago. And when I’ve finally gotten my hands on it, I’m kind of disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, this book was a typical innocent-heroine-dominating-hero story but I guess I built it up so well in my head that it fell short.

The story starts with Josie finding out her unofficial fiancé, Charles, is dead. She blurts out that she’s pregnant. She sites shock and goes home and the next day, Charles’ brother, Conan comes to offer a bargain. Give her child a name and marry her and in return he would get the property that he’s wanted forever. Thus follows the marriage of convenience where Josie thinks of her husband of the cruel man who married for a piece of land.

It’s one of the typical moves a hero makes to mask his love for the heroine and sites a selfish reason that would put him in bad lighting. He thinks that Josie is in love with Charles, his much older, much useless brother. The marriage that follows has problems to say the least.

The blurb was a misleading in my opinion. According to the blurb, Josie loses her memory and that gives Conan the chance to woo her. However, this doesn’t come until too late in the story, in my opinion. And its not given as much importance as hinted in the blurb. Otherwise, this book is a good read.

A story in which she slept with the H’s brother first, giving her virginity to his brother in the H’s bedroom, the H finding them in his bedroom, the h pregnant with his brother’s baby…that is just not my cup of tea.

She was drunk when she slept with his brother, but still…

I read this again after 3 years and remembered none of it, was a surprise to see the rating. 2nd time around didn’t like quite as much, mostly because h is foolish.

Original: I enjoyed this, especially her on-going struggle to either love her husband unconditionally or leave permanently. The amnesia was not really necessary to the plot and to me reduced the strength of the characterization.
