Soooo, I wrote about half of the review and Goodreads just decided to reload. Like EXCUSE YOU!! Anyway, now I gotta write it again, but I don't remember all the stuff and it was coming together really nicely and now I am salty
Review, kinda? Just my thoughts
To be frank, I wasn't expecting to have so much fun whit this one. I mean, it was like a fever dream for most of the time, but the vibe was there so I wouldn't complain about it. I was told that the books is Harry Potter inspired but honestly I don't see it. The similarities are that there is a magic school... and there is a magic school. That's it. The magic system and "world building" were completely different and the dynamic in the friend group. I don't say it as a bad thing, i bearly got through Harry Potter and than it put me in a reading slump. So, I will take my Russian knock off over it any day, thank you very much! But where credit is due for a Russian middle grade magic series from 2005, the book is actually really good. Yeah it is cheese and campy, the ~life lessons~ are too on the nose, but if you can't just hop on for the ride and enjoy the strangeness that sounds like a you problem. Lol
Or maybe I am not so critical of it, because a friend of mine ask me whether I want to read it, because it is one of their favorite books as a child and now I associate it with them and can't really find something to dislike about it, who knows 🤔 If you are reading the review (you know who you are), I assure you, I really enjoyed the book.
If I had to describe the book with one word, it has to be bizarre. The plot structure is pretty standard. You can check off the bingo cart- a prophecy, the chosen one™️, quest for the day, flamboyant villain... you get the idea. The story really didn't suffer from them, what I have an "issue" with (nor really) was some of the more "creative aspects" of the story. Let's just say some choices were made..( spoilers ) like if you use magic in closed spaces and don't air the room you turn into a bird ? And also the big bad- the false ruler in our case, is actually the rabbit-turn-human which belonged to the real king.? These two just cane from nowhere for me.
The friend group was fine, but I lastly wanted to talk about the inciting accident, the catalyst of the story if you will. So basically some people can travel between world, but they can leave their home only if they lose all that connects them to their world, something so dramatic which makes them abandon everything near and dear to their heart. What is this traumatic event you ask, our girl didn't wanted to wear a skirt and some fancy blouse which her mother chose for her for the first day of school (wanted to wear jeans instead) and decided that the best course of action is to run away and live in the woods. Firstly, I just thought: yeah, I get you, I have had literally the same conversation with my mom many, many times and I Know the struggle, but she is too dramatic about. Than I thought some more and understood how hypothetical I am, because a memory came to haunt me and I remembered that I was put in a similar situation (in a way) when i was around 7-8 years old and reacted as dramatic or even more so. Now I say "fair enough" -mad respect, that is some queen behavior 👏 💅
Now I think i am gonna give it 4 stars just because of that realization, we will se (original 3,5)
Omg , This is WAY too long, TLDR fun book I recommend it If you are on the mood for entertaining but not really making a lot of sense. I just don't know how many languages have translation, so good luck.
Did you really read the whole thing? I am genuinely surprised
