The prolific author of over one hundred books for children, Arthur Groom was born in 1898 in Hove, Sussex, and was educated at Whitgift School, Croydon. He worked as a journalist and lecturer, and had a particular interest in scouting. During the Second World War, he was a Captain in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps.
