Raining Fish and Frogs

Rate this book
Nothing was biting on the shore of Lake Fish-or-Cut-Bait. Not even the mosquitoes!
Nothing was biting on the shore of Lake Fish-or-Cut-Bait. Not even the mosquitoes! A ravenous wind sucked up all the water from the lake. It sucked up the fishes and the frogs too. It even sucked up balls from the playground. Then that ravenous wind headed toward town, blowing wind through the branches, and twisting up the playground swings. When that wind could hold no more, rain started falling. It wasn't an ordinary rain. Balls fell on the steeple and rang the bell. Fish and frogs fell on cars in the streets. A fish even fell into the janitor's wash bucket.
It was as if breakfast was landing on people's doorsteps.

Raining Fish and Frogs is a fun 26-page story with bright and colourful illustrations by Janet King. The pictures bring Lois’s words to life and children as well as adults will enjoy.
Lois’s stories have messages within, and we get to share these with our children or grandchildren or those that we love. This book is aimed for kids ages 4-8 years of age. It is nice to sit with them and watch as the gears turn, and their imaginations run wild.
It’s not your usual storm. What happens when the weather changes and instead of rain other things fall from the sky. To find out you will need to grab a copy and find out.
An excellent book to enjoy on a rainy day and a perfect gift if you need one.

While nothing is biting at Lake Fish-or-Cut-Bait, the weather is aggressively changing everything as one fisherman is hoping to catch a fish. See what happens to the fish, frogs and other surprising elements when a storm lands in town.

This was filled with the cycle of a tornado and the science behind it's form. I think kids will be intrigued and find this book entertaining.

What do you do when you fancy trout for breakfast? You go down to Lake Fish-Or-Cut-Bait and see if you can catch something, some days you can, but some days nothing bites, even the mosquitoes who live there.

On one particular day, the wind started howling and sucked up all of the fish, frogs and eels which live in the lake, when it had sucked them all up, it set off to town where it rattled the swings, buffeted the trees and sucked up the balls from the playground, but what happens to them once they are all up in the air?

It has to rain, but this is no ordinary rain, it is raining fish and frogs! What is the phenomenon called when the wind sucks things up and rains them down again? This is an enchanting and informative book talking about the natural world in a fun filled and easy to understand way.

A young man has a hankering for a breakfast of fried trout. What's the best way to get it? Why, go to Lake Fish-or-Cut-Bait and fish for it yourself! Things got a little interesting for him when the winds picked up, and along with that, all the fish and frogs of the lake. The wind took the fish, frogs, and balls that it accumulated along the way into town until it could no longer hold everything. Then it started raining fish and frogs.

Super cute book about the science phenomena of a water spout. I love that this book was done in black and white (at least my copy was) with a colorful cover. The illustrations were very well done and made the story more entertaining. A great way to teach about this science feature, plus about the safety measures that should be taken should you be involved in or near a water spout.

Raining Fish and Frogs is a story that introduces some aspects of science in a silly way. It starts with a person wanting fried trout for breakfast, and to get this he has to fish for his breakfast. Nothing was biting, but a freakish wind came along and sucked up all the water from the lake. The wind and “tornado” like thing got stronger and headed for the town. When the funnel couldn’t hold another thing, it started to rain, but it started to rain all the things is sucked up. Fish and frogs started falling from the sky, water even filled the lake once again. However, what would you know, a fish landed right in front of the person’s home and fried fish for breakfast was now possible. The science portion, at the end of the book, talks about how tornados work. This was a cute book that kids would find silly, and funny, but also informative. The illustrations were also really cute.

Raining Fish and Frogs by Lois Wickstrom is a cute children’s story that has an interesting storyline, sweet illustrations, some adventure, a touch of drama, and even a science lesson at the back of the book.
This cute story is engaging and fun- and the illustrations are interesting and cute. I just wish they had been in colour instead of black and white, as the cover of the book really draws the eye with all the ‘fun’ colours’ and interesting detail. While the inside illustrations are of high quality, I feel that they lack the impact and interest that coloured illustrations would offer. I feel that colour offers so much in the way of capturing the imagination, as well as keeping little minds focused on the ‘adventure’.
But a charming read none-the-less.
Happy reading!

Raining Fish and Frogs
By: Lois Wickstrom

I want to start by saying I have really grown to love the books of Lois Wickstrom. She does a fantastic job of explaining the natural world to young readers. In this book young readers are introduced to the phenomenon of a water spout. It all starts with a young man who decides to go catch a trout for breakfast. While he is there the winds pick up and the fish and the frogs of the lake are taken by them. However, when the winds can’t hold any more it started raining fish and frogs. This was honestly such a great story and the illustrations (as usual) only add to the charm of the book. I definitely recommend getting this story for young elementary readers. It will definitely be finding a permanent place in my classroom library!

Raining Fish and Frogs by Lois Wickstrom. This has become my favorite children's author and I love all her books. This one is no different, it's so good. Its the story of someone wanting fish for breakfast so they had to go fishing to try to catch some. Well there was no fish but while they were there a crazy storm came up. The water all got sucked up by the storm and it started raining. Once the rain began it was no ordinary rain, it was raining Fish and Frogs. All over the place. Then real rain came down and refilled the lake. I love these books because there is always a lesson involved and the pictures are always amazing. My nephews have loved every one of these books. They would make great presents. Its best for young elementary students!

I loved this book. What a fun way to teach about the random way that tornados/waterspouts can send frogs, etc. flying. I grew up hearing about this and often wondered how this could happen. Now, at 58, I know how, crazy. My grandson is now fascinated with this and wants to explore it more. I love the book set up. The name of the lake is funny and made us laugh during story time. If you want to know what it was, you have to read the book, I’m not telling. This author makes learning so much fun. She’s really made learning with my grandson enjoyable and brought many giggles with this new knowledge.

I enjoyed reading this cute story about the wind and rain. This is an author that I have enjoyed every children’s book I have read by her. This is a story about how the wind empty’s the lake of fish and frogs. Just when you thought the wind could hold no more, it started raining. No, not the rain you are used to. This rain is full of fish and frogs. This is such a cute story with cute characters. There is great growth that adds to the story’s entertainment. I also enjoyed the illustrations that told a story without even reading the words. The pages are engaging and a story any child would enjoy reading. I highly recommend this child’s book.

Everyone in my family absolutely LOVES all of Lois Wickstrom’s books! We always learn something in a fun and imaginative way. This author could never write too many books because we are always clamoring for more! This story was incredibly informative in a wonderfully whimsical way. The illustrations were also beautiful and added depth to the story. My kiddos laughed when random items began raining from the sky that had been pulled from the lake! Towards the end we got to learn about tornadoes and natural weather phenomena. I highly recommend picking this up and sharing with the young ones in your family!

Love the use of vocabulary (hankering, ravenous) and the entertaining story... thought it was bizarre it was in black and white .

Raining Fish and Frogs is another interesting children's book from Lois Wickstrom. Its an introduction to different weathers but in a fun and engaging way for children. The story is accompanied by some beautiful illustrations that are sure to capture children's interest from the start. There's a great science project at the end of the book too – something we've come to expect from this author. I'm sure little enquiring minds would be wanting to find out more about whether a tornado can in fact suck up fish and frogs!

Science is fun. Nothing better than reading a child a book. This one touches on science. Could it really be raining? Are those raindrops or fish falling from the sky? Strong winds do have a way of sucking up everything in its path. This is one of those stories. Only it explains weather in such a cute, educational way. I love this story. I also enjoy reading this author's books. It's a fast flowing read and the pictures are fantastic. Everytime this author finishes a book I am excited to see what my grandchildren will learn.

My son and I are big fans of the author, and enjoyed Raining Fish and Frogs. The illustrations were bright and colorful and some silly. A wind sucked up everything in the lake- water and animals included. It got so strong that it kept sucking things up and spitting them back out all across town. We assumed it was from the author's imagination, and were shocked to read that its partly true. Upon finishing, we headed over to google and read some articles of this happening in real life. It is a fun story for elementary age kiddos. It could be tied into a science lesson on weather.

Another cute title by this author which starts with a man who wants trout for breakfast so he heads off to the lake but nothing is biting!
Then the wind picks up and a waterspout forms and picks up all the water and fish and frogs and heads for town.
While in town it starts dropping the fish and frogs and water...including a fish right on the doorstep of the fisherman.
Cute story telling what happens with a waterspout in language a kid can understand and very cute illustrations. My kid was 5 I read it to.

Instead of raining cats and dogs. This quirky version is raining frogs and fish LOL I liked it, it was funny. And a fun way to get your fish🤣 I really like the drawing style, it reminds me very much of the Sunday comics in the newspapers🥰 And as always I enjoy reading books by Lois Wickstrom. Especially because she always adds cool things at the end of her books. Like waterspouts I heard of them. I didn't know that they can sometimes suck a lake dry, interesting. Looking forward to reading more from this author 🥰

Raining Fish and Frogs by Lois Wickstrom

The thing that I love most about this author’s books is that you will always learn something. She incorporates science in a fun way that will teach children while they read. The book is geared towards children ages 7-9. It’s fairly simple to read with plenty of illustrations to add to the story. It might seem silly that it is raining fish and frogs but there is a possibility that it can happen. The author explains how at the end. I think it is fascinating.

Great concept. I was excited based on the colors of the cover but was sad to see the inside is black and white. While that is also appealing, color usually catches children’s eyes. I do alway love the end of Lois Wickstrom books because, there is always a scientific lesson to be learned or something to teach, and in this case we get to learn about waterspouts. I think this book also gets kids interested in what trout would taste like.

Raining Fish and Frogs is such a cute fun read. I picked it for all my grandkids ages 2-10. It was perfect for them and all of them loved it. We are a family that does a lot of fishing at the lake, so it seemed quite fitting. It was easy for the older ones to read to the 2-year-old. The pictures are great also. If you fish with your kids or grandkids, then this is a perfect book. But its great even if you don't.

I really enjoyed this cute little picture book , which talks about how tornadoes are formed . A fisherman was trying to catch fish to make trout , but the lake was quiet . Then a tornado is formed and it sucks all the fish and frog from the lake and drops them everywhere in the town . It finally drops a trout at the fisherman’s home and he enjoys his meal.

Very nice story , great illustrations.

Forget raining cats and dogs, Lois Wickstrom took an odd natural phenomenon, a waterspout, and made it into a fun story about raining fish and frogs! The illustrations are just as much fun as the text. My children laughed throughout the story and asked many questions afterwards. Be sure to read Raining Fish and Frogs when you have time to look for actual pictures of waterspouts, entertain questions about natural phenomena, and preform science experiments!

I absolutely loved this cute story about a man going fishing and having a "rough morning". My kids both enjoyed the illustrations in the book, with fish and frogs (and eels!) being sucked up into the air and raining down throughout town!
For me, as a parent, the best part was the "Science Note" at the end of the book, explaining what a waterspout is and how, even though this story is whimsical and fun, there is some truth and potential to happen!

I knew from the title this book was going to be amazing and it didn’t disappoint. It’s so much fun and beautifully illustrated. My seven-year-old son had a field day looking at all the pictures and pointing out the silliest thing he could find. He especially loved the science note at the end that said while it is not often it is possible for a tornado to suck up water, he thought it was awesome and hopes to see falling fish and frogs one day.

My kids really enjoyed this book! I love that the author uses science in her books to teach about real life things while also adding in aspects that catch a kids attention to make it fun to learn.
When a water spout comes and sucks up everything from the lake and around it in town and starts to rain all its sucked up, it takes on a new meaning to its raining cats and dogs.

Loved the illustrations and my kids have now read this a couple more times in their own.

What a cute book explaining the phenomena that can really happen - a tornado can form over a body of water and suck up whatever is in its way and then rain it out later. That must be where the saying "raining cats and dogs come from." Lois Wickstrom always has a fun way to explain science to young readers.

This book was so witty and hilarious. A fisherman was trying to fish to make fried trout. but the lake was super quiet. Until a water tornado came through and sucked up all the fish, frogs and eels. Even toys from the playground. Luckily the fisherman was able to get trout when the tornado started dropping fish.
Such a silly book but was so wonderful! Another amazing read by Lois!

Raining Fish and Frogs by Lois Wickstrom- 4 out of 5 stars

Another great children's book with beautiful black and white illustrations throughout. I love how the author teaches children with every book. This one being a scientific one about weird weather. I was a bit disappointed that the book lacked color. Fun book from front to back. I recommend.
