When Karen Ingalls was diagnosed with Stage IIC ovarian cancer, she realized that as a woman and a retired nurse she knew very little about this "silent killer." Given a 50% chance to live 5 years, she made a vow to let women know about ovarian cancer and to live each moment with love. Lost in the information about drugs, side effects, and statistics, Ms. Ingalls redirected her energy to focus on the equally overwhelming blessings of life, learning to rejoice in each day, and find peace in spirituality. In this book, the reader will find a refreshing perspective of hope with the knowledge that "the beauty of the soul, the real me and the real you, outshines the effects of cancer, chemotherapy, and radiation."
My first book, Outshine: An Ovarian Cancer Memoir won first place in Women's Health and a finalist in Cancer for the National Indie Excellence Award 2013; and was a finalist in both Cancer and Self-Help categories for the Midwest Independent Publishers Award 2012. All proceeds to to gynecologic cancer research. My first novel is Novy's Son about one man's search for love and acceptance from his father. David: Model & Mistress of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is a fictionalized biography of America's preeminent sculptor in the 1880-1920 era.
Karen writes openly and lovingly about being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She shares her journey, with all its ups and downs, through the lens of faith. The diagnosis evoked fear but became a tool for helping others face the same. Karen marched forward with chemo and other treatments with extraordinary dignity and determination. She's now in remission.
Outshine is a testimony to the strength of the human spirit. It is also an invaluable resource for anyone facing the same diagnosis. I highly recommend this book.
