I really love this book. I use it as a reference book, when find discomfort in specific movements, I can pick it up and use it to help me navigate my problem. I do like Feldenkrais as a pathway to get in touch with my body...what movements are easy and which are more difficult? Where is there a pull or a tension?
I know many people that love Feldenkrais classes, but I have never had a great experience with them. They usually move a little to slow or the useful pieces don't seem to come frequently enough. I do get a lot out of private one-on-one lessons, but I can't always afford them or make the time. This book is perfect companion to my occasional sessions.
My favorite kind of reference book is one that I can pick up when I've got something to work on, spend a few minutes browsing to find the section that is going to help me then I can just get going and get the info I am looking for. This is that book for delivering Feldenkrais info.
I was recently noticing that my stride seemed really uneven and that I was turning my ankles out while walking on uneven ground because I wasn't using my arch while walking. It took me about 1 minute to find "The Shoe Saver Lesson" which led me through exercises exploring this exact issue...what is happening while I walk and what does that mean for my foot. My problems are certainly not solved, but this was a great start and I will not only be revisiting this lesson, but have also scheduled a session with my practitioner.
The lessons presented in this book vary in length of time from 5 minutes to over 15 minutes. I have to say, it is simply amazing what I can accomplish in 5-10 minutes when I really set my mind to it and put all of my awareness into the lesson.
The book is published right here in the East Bay by Frank Wildman at the Feldenkrais Movement Institute.
